Back in 03 just before the worlds both associated and j-concepts planned together to build the bj4.Brad and jason did all of the designing from the ground up but in conjunction with associated who only had a minor influence. There are lots of other factors im sure behind all this.It annoys me when people just guess what has actually happened.

1)New Product. For Immediate Release: 7/10/07
The Factory Team B44 project came
to life in 2003 as a cooperative effort
between Team Associated and
J Concepts’ Jason Ruona and Brad
Reelfs.
^A play on words, J Concepts bought parts from Associated to build the BJ4's. By "cooperative", Associated meant that their parts were used on the BJ4. All the effort was done by Brad and Jason.^
2) After Team Associated’s Ryan
Cavalieri won the 2005 IFMAR World
Championships in Collegno, Italy with the
BJ4 Worlds Edition, Area 51 shifted into
overdrive to produce a true ‘Associated’
inspired 4WD buggy that would continue to
dominate the 4WD off road racing class.
The B44 is the result of this two-year
development effort.
^This sounds more like the truth, notice it says 2 YEAR development effort, not 5 year like it would have been had they actually been behind the development of the original BJ4 since 2003.^
3)During the design and development stages Associated used their
extensive and well-proven skills to make a 4WD competition buggy that
is better suited to production. The results of this optimization are
realized by you, the customer, in a more cost-effective vehicle with
more readily available spare parts.
^Explains why its less expensive^

The original BJ4 concept and design was entirely the work of Jason and me. Originally, we didn't intend to produce and sell kits. It was just a fun project for the 2003 Worlds. Only a handful of people knew we were planning to make our own car. Associated's involvement was limited to parts support and Jason's racing (Reedy/LRP).
The car generated a lot of interest at the 2003 Worlds, so we decided to produce our own kits. Many Associated drivers approached us and said they would like to race our car. Associated's involvement grew to include team support (drivers, parts, etc). We were buying parts from Associated to package in our kits, so they had good reason to support our racing efforts.
As 4WD racing gained popularity, Associated decided that they wanted to produce their own car based on the BJ4. We reached an agreement with Associated and began working in full collaboration to design the B44. During that time, we continued to produce BJ4 kits with Associated's support for the racing team.
READ THIS, straight from one of two of the BJ4's original designers, Brad Reelfs

And another quote from Brad Reelfs : There were only two prototype BJ4's at the 2003 World Championships. If Associated had developed the original BJ4, don't you think Mark Pavidis and Billy Easton would have been driving them instead of Jason and me?

Alright guys, everybody knows that AE screwed up the wording on their press release and we are not happy about it. Lets move on.
I'm curious if they will make a RTR version. It would be nice but I don't see it happening with the saddle pack battery setup.

I was trying to settle the debate, and it seems that I just added fuel to the fire. This goes back to my comment about people taking an "all or nothing" interpretation of statements that have been made by both Associated and JConcepts.
It seems people either want to say Associated had nothing to do with the original BJ4, or that it was Associated's project all along. The truth is somewhere in the middle. The original BJ4 was not an Associated project, but they knew what we were doing and supported our effort.
