What is shellite and where do you get it?

Timmy_G 07-06-2004 04:13 AM

umm

its clear, flamble, liquid, flamable, and flamable. Sold at hardware stores, and is $3-$5 for a litre.

Abu Habib 07-07-2004 01:53 AM

I don't think they use the name "Shellite"anymore- basically its lighter fluid.

Timmy_G 07-07-2004 02:40 AM

The last time i got it i bought it from Ozzy Disposals, and it was $3.95 a litre n still called shellite as far as i know?

Bunnings sell it too but it's more expensive, $6 I think.

I saw bottles of Shellite for sale on the shelf in Woolworths just last week. (not the liquor section- try auto section, next to the bottled kero and metho)

i i were you guys i would not use this shellite stuff. if you wanted to run-in your 540 motor better drop some lube oil in to the glass of water and if you want to lube the com and brushes just buy som bushing lube from your LHS for about $10 and then you cn also use it on your bearing before each race to keep them smooth.

trust me this method is much easier that frigen' around with the highly flamible shelite stuff.

You have to live with a little danger every now and then.

I also recommend trying to crack onto you girlfriends sister.

More fun than running in 540's

has anyone tried using another motor attached to a 540 through gears or similar to run in said 540 . i mean no electric current would mean no heat from current . i have also heard 1 "sap" saying he "adjusted" the leaf spring tension on the bushes of his 540 gaing more performance. this is ilegal isnt it. and being so how do they scrutineer against such modifications:confused:

I have an old home made jig that we used to run in 540's while putting "braso" on the bushes.

Took to long, the motor in a glass of water ,and tooth paste works best.
As most know tooth paste is like 2000 grit sandpaper, so it grinds away at the bushes, and brushes.

And as far as the bending of the "leaf" brush bending, it does work but it is illegal.:flaming:

My way for a meet used to be ,run the (new) motor in a glass of water, with about a tea spoon of tooth paste.
About 10 minutes.

Dry off the motor, then spray it out with "BAZ IN A CAN" (now use orion or trinity motor spray) ,let it air dry.

Put a drop of bushing oil on each bushing ,then work the armature up and down ,and spinning.

Put it in the car ,but with a pinoin gear 2 teeth lower than you would normally run, I used to do this for the first 2 runs of the day, because this helps bed the brushes in better ,and also how often does TQ be set in the first 2 heats???

Give it a go, and good luck.

Has anyone acutally tested their methods of run-in on say a dyno or similar, or if they have any links of evidence that these methods work would be nice :)

Timmy_G 07-09-2004 03:32 PM

i won the 4wd 540 nationals are canberra in 97.
