Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

I'm not sure if that is for one pad, or if there are two in the package. Seems pricy for just one.
I'm trying to get to a 70/25 on my 13.5 with the direct drive, if that is possible?

What else is needed to run the 22 2.0 slipper set up on the 3.0, and does it work as well? Since TLR is claiming the 3.0 to be Heavy Duty slipper?

For the 2.0 slipper all you need is 2 old style slipper pads and the 70t spur that use the old pads. it works well enough for me. 17.5 and 13.5

Losi has a 69t direct drive spur, that would be close enough. They recommend 70-30 for 17.5 and I run 70-35. So that 70/25 isn't set in stone.

If you want a slipper and a spur around 70t, I recommend the Avid slipper. Way better than the old 2.0 slipper.

Is there something special about the 70/25 combo? Can you just create the same approximate FDR with the 69T direct drive spur and the right pinion? Sorry I am way off point, I need more coffee lol.

I'm sure I could... But I wanted to try what the manual states for the 13.5T motor gearing. And the DDS says recommended 17.5T and not made for the 13.5T!

The only real difference are the friction rings. I switched to the 2.0 rings and never looked back. I really only use the slipper to protect the diff, not for any kind of traction control (17.5 racing).

I, and many other people run direct drive in 13.5 with no issues. Unless you're on a very small track you should start your gearing around 72/28.

I have converted my 3.0 front axle to the 2.0 to save on buying more front tires. Now TLR discontinued the lug screw. What do I use now? Any Ideas?

A button head screw or a longer screw thru from the backside with a locknut should do it

Hex screw with an alloy socket-type washer. A little less convenient than being able to jse the same 7mm wrench on all 4 wheels but certainly not the end of the world.

Send me a PM with your mailing address and I'll give you some titanium axles so you can use standard nuts. I no longer need them and they are just sitting in my spares box....

So 2 races in and loving my SR, haven't changed a thing from box setup and its the easiest car to drive (at least for me). But the time has come to change things.... my laydown kit arrived the other day.
Alot of the setup sheets I see are for mod setups, anyone have a good 17.5 laydown carpet setup or could point me to one?

Thank Everyone for your feedback and ideas. After race day at the track yesterday and talking with the guys and taking your info into consideration. I went with the schelle slipper, which is very similar to the Avid slipper.

Next question: Is this the size thrust bearing for our buggies? [2.5x6x3]

Thank You again
