There is no correct position for the rear calipers, they can be either in front of or behind the axle.

True that the brake caliper orientation can go either way in the real world. However, on the mid '70s 930 RSR that the HPI body is based on the brakes were in front of the axle in the front and trailing in the rear. Interestingly enough, the 997 based GT3 RSR from the mid 2000s was just the opposite, trailing in the front and leading in the rear.

Ok guys,

I've been a Porsche owner for almost 20 years having owned a 1982 911SC and a 1998 993 CarreraS and will routinely do my own brake work. This year marks the 50th year of the 911. I can inform you that every year of the air-cooled 911 from 1963 to today that the brakes are leading at both the front and rear axles. These pictures are just quickie snap shots of the 993 calipers leading front and rear and my Cup Racer.

Your Cup Racer is your car and you can do whatever you please but I just had to state the case for Porsche brakes.

I'm not looking to get in an internet pissing match here, but if there's one car I know better than any other, it's the '73 RSR.

From the time I was born until I was 12 I lived across the street from a guy that owned a Porsche repair shop in Portland, OR and raced a 1973 930 RSR. I spent hours and hours in his home shop just staring at car and memorizing every detail. I know that car inside out and backwards. The rear calipers when looked at from the left side are in the 2 o'clock position and a quick Google image search backs me up on that.



Newer RSR (the only reason I know this one is because the first time I saw it it jumped out at me that the brakes were exactly the opposite):



BTW - If you go to the local Porsche club track meets there's a good chance we know a handful of the same people. My cousin has and a group of his friends all go pretty regularly. If you know a ~5' tall former motorcycle racer with a '94 Tagra, that's my cousin.

BTW guys I was recently in contact with one of the Cup Racer designers and like myself, he's a certified 911 NUT! I have an '84 factory wide body. I'm going to let him know about this thread, he's gonna get a huge kick out of it!

I honestly can't speak with any authority to any car other than this very specific one. IIRC there were a handful of parts spec'd from other factory racecars including the 917 and the brakes may be included in that. There was less than 500 RSRs built (according to my neighbor from so many years ago) and the low number and special parts may account for the discrepancy between CarerraRSeattle's account of caliper location and mine. Any other car and I'd be lost.

Now if you'll excuse me I've got to call my parents up and have them dig through old photos of my childhood, I've got something in there that probably should have been framed years ago.

..fyi,

porsche bodies are still available and easy to find ...i found many sites selling them for about $35. Not sure if you guys were suggesting that they discontinued the porsche body, (I know the calipers are discontinued).

Anyway, I may snatch up a few Porsche bodies in case they do decide to stop making them.

I guess my question would be, what is the authenticity of the co's (sheldon's seems legit)?
