You can get it fairly close, but there is always the suspension geometry, and those sweet, sweet alloy bulkheads.
There is nothing stoping you from making a fully hopped up 04, it just doesn't have the alloy. I've seen them all over the place, have a look in on of the recent issues of RC Car magazine I think. They had a side by side test of the 414M and a fully hopped up 04.
Just remember it is cheaper to find a 414M than to build a 04 to close specs of the 414M!!

has anyone built their diffs without using the rubber spacers and grease in the outdrives? Are these things necessary? No other manufacturer does this as far as I know. Yet another Tamiya quirk?

BTW, I just changed out my stock plate to the carbon tub and now have a tight belt. I'll hold out for the new one rather than send it back.

I just got my revised 04R chassis yesterday It was well worth the wait (almost 4 months) but the new chassis is much nicer...the battery slots, the countersunk screws...And the front belt is noticably looser than with the original chassis

The newer chassis also feels lighter than the original one...Never weighed the 2 together...I cant wait to run the car this weekend

coolrcdad

I received mine in the mail yesterday from TA. It was a replacement for the stock chassis. Its a really nice chassis. Definetly it was worth waiting for.

I got mine already cuz WAAAY back in November I sent my original chassis back to Tamiya becuase of the front belt problems...I was added to a list of chassis to be replaced - and after the 4 LONG months, I finally got the replacement carbon fiber chassis...In the mean time, Tamiya sent out a standard plastic TA04 chassis so I could still run the car

Maybe I was lucky....or it could have been cause I was calling each week and asking where/when the replacement would be ready

Aurra,
I believe you are using a 414M now, but could you give me the part no for your TA04 carbon saddle pack chassis? The ones I find on tamiya's site is this doesn't seem to have slots for the batteries.

Thanks.

The part number for the saddle chassis WITH upper deck is 52001.

http://www.tamiya.nl/tamoptions/tam_53000_ta04.html
http://www.tamiya.dk/rc/ta04_hopup.html

Notice you will need screws and chassis posts (for the rear bulkhead) to install it on the tub cars.

I have a scan of mine if you want. I remember you asking that you wanted scans of the chassis.

I just receved my new R chassis as well. I've been waiting a long time for it as did some of you. It really looks nice, and is very light. I'm not sure what to do with it yet (I'm not selling so dont ask) because when Tamiya sent me that heavy, plastic, tank tubby, tub chassis, I used it once and imediately ordered the carbon 04 stick pack chassis. I may just use the new chassis to assemble another car to put on my shelf as a display with that beautiful altezza body that came with the original R kit!

Hey Aurra,
Thanks for the part no! But somehow I can't find it at tamiya.com, is that part a region specific part?

Also, any idea if the stick carbon chassis be adapted for use with saddle packs?

Thanks!

Yeah the Tamiya English is for the world really, it is a translation of the Japanese site.
It will only be on the American Tamiya site, because it is known as the "US Spec Carbon Chassis". It is only distributed in the states.

Hey guys,
if you are talking about the new TA04 chassis (which I think you are) I got one last weekend. It had a little tweek, but after 24hours in the freezer it's perfect. If you want I can try and post pics and I can tell you how well it works after this Saturday.
