ths switch is handyier than having to pull out the plug. Easier to reach on the car with the body on. If you think it's trouble source, don't use it.
About your battery swell up, easy rules to follow:
Always use balancing process during charge.
Always use Lipo mode on the speedo.
Never store a full battery.
Always use storage function after using the battery.
Yes, if the shape is back to normal, that means the inner chemistry get back to normal, you're lucky. Respect the rules above and everything should be fine.

Also, in what conditions is it dangerous to store a fully charged LiPo pack?

I'm also wondering how you balance a 1c Lipo?
And I have often left my LiPo packs charges for a few weeks, this is just in case I get a chance at a practice day, and even the 2s packs that are now some 18 months old are working like new.
(have been told to half discharge and recharge if left for more than 4 weeks)
Only thing you never do is leave a LiPo at a too lower charge, store at no less than 3.6v per LiPo cell I think I was told (7.2v for 2s, 10.8v for 3s).

You can read the recommendations when you buy a lipo pack.
Never store a full charged pack.
Try once if you want to check for yourself. But make sure you leave the pack outdoor away from any flamable material.
