I would skip the FGX, it's gearing limitations make it for the most part uncompetitive.
The F104W GP edition and TRF101 are good choices as is the F1R2

There is also the F104 V2 but it needs quite a few hopups to be competitive

I don't have any experience with the f101 but here at the local tracks, the f104 v2 is the car of choice. All that is needed is an $11 carbon fiber plate that attaches to the rear shock. But even without that hopup, it's very competitive out of the box.

There are some that have tried the fgx here but found it to be a little fragile.

I would advise you consider the Speed Passion F1car as well...you get more car for less price shorthanded great. There is also the new CRC F1 car coming out very soon.

Should your club allow 200mm cars the 104wgp is without questions the fastest of all mentioned.

Having done extensive testing with a wide range of the currently available cars I have found t-bar based cars to have a significant advantage in bumpy conditions, carry more speed through longer flowing corners with greater stability & consistency in traffic and off line. The link cars make more forward traction, are quicker off center and carry more speed though tighter low speed corners.

The F104W GP, F104 PRO, TRF101 are out of the question, they simply are out of budget.

The F1R2 cannot be considered since I don't have access to it.

Therefore, I can only consider the Sakura FGX, base F104 or the F104w.

Our track only uses silver can for these types of races, so maybe the gearing options for the Sakura is adequate?

Smile, the Sakura FGX is good based on our F1 Club rules. Easy to drive, cheapest among all F1. Competitive whether Silvercan or 21.5.

2nd place FGX was 21.5, mine (3rd) was Silvercan. I also drove the 2nd place car in the 3rd A-Main, same laptimes as mine.



If you are new to F1, you might even go faster initially with the FGX, easier and fun to drive.

Another question though:
If I were to buy the FGX, what additional parts do I have to purchase to adjust it to our track and prevent breakages? This is so that I can consider all costs when I buy the kit.

The FGX is a case of pay me now or pay me later. Yes it is an inexpensive kit, but it needs a lot to make it durable and competitive. Because of its handling advantages it is very quick in the tight technical parts of the track, but that advantage is erased on the other parts when it runs out of gear.
In my original recommendation I forgot to include the SpeedPassion SP1
For under $200 it is a top level kit that only needs a couple of other options to be maximized.

I have an SP-1 with Pit tires that I run on a CRC carpet track. I'm having some issues with front/overall traction that I'm hoping you all can help me figure out.

So, the front Pit tire is a bit tapered/coned on the outside half, which seems like a bit of built in camber. What I'm trying to figure out is the tire sauce strategy vs. camber settings vs. caster settings.

I was running a 10 degree caster plate, 1 degree camber, and then saucing the front tires 1/2 - 3/4, depending on the track grip. I was still understeering so I flipped the caster plate to the 5 degree size, keeping camber at 1 degree and saucing similar. I suddenly had a on more steer.

It seems to me that, with the outside coning/taper, saucing the front Pit tires is tricky. The window of proper grip is very narrow. I wanted to ask how you guys handle this? What's the typical camber settings for these guys, and how do you sauce throughout the night?

And should I stick with the 5 degree caster plate, or go back to 10 degrees?

Any help/explanation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi guys, what kind of gears are you using in the F1cars? I have the Tamiya F104 I was thinking of changing to 64 pitch like my on road cars..

Personally I use xray gears. Any pancar gear should work fine though.
