Default Newbie racing questions

i want to start racing RC, and have a few questions, i have a xxxnt and a MLST.

what is mandatory in the way of number plates?
what do i need to do as per frequency changes, do i need to buy more chips?

i want to race close to here, the only track that i know of is the one on 41 near oshkosh. what are some of the local tracks?

what are some of the rules that a newbie should know, track ediquette (sp)?

any help would be great, i just want to make a couple before winter.

I am not exactly sure as to where you are but there is a track in Lomira and also a track in Beaver Dam. For racing just bring what you got and go from there. Some is always at the track willing to help out if you need it.

Some answers...
  • Numbers are generally not required on vehicles.
  • You can get away with only having one frequency in most cases. If there are two of you that only have one frequency and they match, the higher qualifier gets to race in the main. The lower qualifier realizes he better practice a bit or go buy another crystal so it doesn't happen again.
  • You will need a hole in the body of your vehicle to mount a handout transponder. That's the widget that counts your laps when you cross the start/finish line. I think the standard is 1/4" or so. Bring at least one extra body clip to hold the transponder in place.
  • The active off-road track closest to Appleton is at Outagamie Conservation Club. They run on Monday nights. Here's a thread with more track info. http://www.rctech.net/forum/showthread.php?t=116068
  • Do bring whatever spare parts you have and the tools you use regularly. There isn't a store at OCC. A chair, folding table, and extension cord can come in handy too.
  • Do use frequency clips. During practice time, before you turn on your radio and car, you have to grab the clothespin with your frequency channel number on it, so you know you're the only one operating on it. Clip it to your radio antennae. When you're done, return it to the board. Anyone not using a clip either has a Spektrum system (which do channels differently) or is being a self-centered prick.
  • Don't wait till the last second to pay and register. If there's someone at the scoring booth when you get there, go talk to them. Ask any questions you have - stupid or otherwise. Don't worry - they've been asked dumber questions than anything you can think of.
  • Don't forget to corner marshall the race after yours.
  • Do bring bug spray. Just in case.
  • Do bring munchies and beverages. The bar there isn't always open.

www.wiocc.com closest track to you right now. Dirt Heaven Hobbies has parts on hand. There isnt a mini class but the 1/10 gas class has a good turnout. The track is about 8 miles north of appelton
