I'm new to wheeled rc vehicles but my wife picked me up this associated 4.2. Will I be able to run here or do I need to buy a buggy or sct? Its the bone stock rtr package so Idk what rules and classes are. Bashing just isn't a lot of fun for me...I live right around the corner from Indy r/c I just found out lol.
Also, if I can run this rig, do I stand a snowball's chance in hell of actually being competitive or will I be outrun by everything?
I know I'm still learning but getting your balls kicked in doesn't do a whole lot for the fun factor.

A T4.2 (assuming here) would be in the mod stadium truck class. The class makes from time to time and can be pretty competitive. I have a 22T i need to dust off and run actually.
Yes you can be competitive with that platform but you will want to practice and play with the setup some to suit the track and your driving style. Its pretty rare that the out of the box setup works for a racing environment. The 3300 motor you have is about a 10.5 and should be just enough power to get you over everything but you may want to swap out the esc and motor at a later date for something that is more adjustable.
Last item would be tires. The stock tires are great for all around running but for racing you might want to get a set of holeshots, dirt webs, or something in a soft small pin.
Hope this helps!

Is there even a such thing as a decent budget motor esc combo that's worth a darn?
I have actually been looking at the dirt webs maybe I'll go ahead and pull the trigger on a set.
Question about tires on stadium trucks...should I always run knobs in the rear and ribs up front like it came or should I change that?

Way back when ribs up front was THE ticket, more recently I see guys running the same tire all the way around. Gives more forward traction and helps the car turn in better. I forgot to mention that I really like barcodes/suburbs as well.
If you really want to get into racing and avoid a good bit of that nonsense, get a 2wd brushed slash. Indy runs an excellent Spec class (had 20 trucks last week!) and it becomes all about the driving because everyone has the same gear.

I still need to get down there to run some laps. What are the best days to get track time without the fast guys beating me up?

Indy RC World 2wd Spec Slash Rules
- Upgrades are to be based on durability only.
- Shock Tops, Springs and Oils will be allowed.
- Any short course truck body can be used.
- Tires must be stock, available Traxxas SC tires.
- Misc. parts will be allowed that do not allow an increase in performance.
- NO low CG chassis allowed.
- Must use stock transmission.
- Must run the Titan 12T motor.
- Racers can use a 2S Lipo battery.
- Racers may use their own radio.
- A transponder should be added for racing purposes.
Not sure if this is a complete list, but this is what I found:
- #5871 Tires, off-road racing, SCT dual profile 4.3x1.7- 2.2/3.0" (2)/ foam inserts (2)
- #5871R Tires, Ultra soft, S1 compound for off-road racing, SCT dual profile 4.3x1.7- 2.2/3.0" (2)/ foam inserts (2)
- #6870 Tires, Kumho (dual profile 4.3x1.7- 2.2/3.0") (2)/ foam inserts (2)
- #6870R Tires, Kumho, ultra-soft (S1 off-road racing compound) (dual profile 4.3x1.7- 2.2/3.0") (2)/ foam inserts (2)
- #6871 Tires, BFGoodrich® Mud-Terrain T/A® KM2 (dual profile 4.3x1.7- 2.2/3.0") (2)/ foam inserts (2)
- #6871R Tires, BFGoodrich® Mud-Terrain T/A® KM2 , ultra-soft (S1 off-road racing compound) (dual profile 4.3x1.7- 2.2/3.0") (2)/ foam inserts (2)
Turns out the tires I've got are the 6870 (non-S1) Kumhos. Had them for years for bashing and definitely not grippy. LOL. I would hate to push for a spec class that I don't even have the right spec tires for.

RJ, Yes your Kumho tires are OK for the Spec Slash class. The topic of "What are 'Stock Slash Tires'" came up at Indy RC World. The answer was in this chart provided by Traxxas. So basically if your tire and wheel are not listed in this Traxxas Chart, then it's considered illegal for the class.
