Default Race Rescheduled to 11 Nov (10am start)

As yesterday's race could not be completed due to rain, RaceWorks has decided to re-run the race this coming Sunday, 11 Nov. So, those who could not make it out to yesterday's race have the chance to take part afterall.

Instead of an afternoon start, we will now adopt our usual 10am start to give us more time to complete the event should rain fall at anytime during the race program.

We would like to thank racers in the 17.5T Spec Class at yesterday's race for gamely trying out a new race format in which a minimum lap time was set to reward consistent driving (rather than speed). Based on yesterday's track layout, we set a min. lap time of 21 secs (racers clocking lap times below 21 secs had that lap disregarded). We will run this same format again for 17.5T Spec Class at this coming re-scheduled race. The objective for adopting this format is to take raw speed out of the equation in this class, and to promote driving consistency. We believe, and hope racers share the same view, that this will result in close racing where all racers have a chance of a good result.

Please re-register your entry below. No entry fees will be payable for those who have already paid for yesterday's race. Otherwise, the fees are as follows:-

RaceWorks members - $10 per class / Non-members - $15 per class
Rental transponders will be available at $5 per transponder

Please note that RaceWorks reserves the right to impose track fees for those who remain after the race to practice.

If this sunday running this format again, can race commentator make sure to let us know our timing for all our laps? Yesterday qualifying, there are 5-7 laps my timing was not read out so i dont even know my timing is below or above 21secs. I dont even know whether to run perfect lining or just run wide to avoid laps not counted. It is even more stress running this class then running the 13.5t class.

eh.. if my consistent timing is 19-20 secs then i must slow down?

Consistent driving is up the driver to practice and not hampered by a set time.. a race is a contest of speed... or we can call this 17.5T Spec Class Consistency Run!

the problem now is, if you driving alone, you can be very consistent. But with other cars on the track, how you going to be consistent? One slow car block you on a corner and you will see your timing go 1 sec up.

Gentlemen

Many thanks for your comments, feedback and suggestion. We did anticipate that running this format could possibly result in various alternative views, but your inputs are well taken. Let us shed a bit more light on our thinking.

The objective of running a Spec class is clear - basically to equalise the "non-driver" related variables and control the speed so that newcomers to our hobby have a class that they can participate in. We attempted to do this with the ROCS Spec class where a controlled ESC, motor and gear ratio were imposed. However, during the season, it was observed there was still quite a gap in terms of raw speed, meaning that even if one car was driving consistently, with tight racing lines, it was still possible for another car to blaze past on the straight. Since the goal is to equalise "non-driver" aspects, we felt that setting a reasonable min.lap time was an alternative to be considered. In essence, we wanted to eliminate a situation where a driver is consistently running 19-20 sec laps times against racer where, due to various equipment differences, the best he can get is 21 - 22 secs. Under such a situation, it is not difficult to see that the consistently slower racer will drop out of racing since he simply has no chance to be competitive - unless he is willing to invest in other equipment. Not all have the budget to constantly upgrade their equipment, and this is not something that RaceWorks advocates, especially for those starting out in the hobby. The seasoned racers will know that the best way to improve is to simply focus on their driving rather than worrying about what other "latest and the greatest" will give them more speed. Race Works hopes to attract more newcomers to experience racing through this class.

During Sunday's race, racers were rightfully adjusting their throttle travel/EPA to allow them to slow their cars down, so that they do not need to "mechanically" control their speeds using their throttle finger. However, many were attempting to gain an advantage by setting their travel/EPA such that their lap times were very close to the min. lap time. Our advice is to provide a greater buffer, so that a lap with perfect lines will record a time close to the min. lap time, but not faster than that. Some have asked us to consider lowering the lap time by a fraction so that lap times that just fall under will not be penalised. We could do that, but if racers are again tweaking their speeds to be close to that lower min. lap time, then the same situation will arise again.

While every approach has its pros/cons, and indeed this format has as well, we decided to give this a try as it seems to meet the objectives stated up front of having a class where racing lines and consistency are all that matter. So perhaps, we should indeed, rename the class as suggested above.

Indeed you should!

Otherwise, if it's a race or controlled race, the drivers should be allowed to contest the speed to their hearts content under the specific states of rules and regulations, with their experience in driving, knowledge of set up etc.

Haha, yes. We have a class for that - "13.5T Stock Class" turbo boost allowed even

At the end of the day, we would like to offer a class that allows newcomers to experience racing without being intimidated, where they can be reasonably competitive without the need for raw speed. We believe this is what makes racing fun. Hopefully this will attract more to give this wonderful hobby a try and to keep racing.

RaceWorks thanks all our wonderful racers for their support. We aim to bring everyone another great new season of racing in 2013 ! In the meantime, let's hope the weather cooperates and we get a day of wonderful racing this Sunday, in the RaceWorks Onroad Bash !
