It will probably make sense after you get everything set-up in front of you.

You cut from right to left. When you get all the way over to the left next to the tabs on the armature, stop the lathe motor, rotate the armature with you hand until the tip of the bit lines up with one of the slots between the comm segments, and move the bit all the way back over to the right. Then turn on lathe motor, reblack the comm with your sharpie, turn the bit in one notch on the dial, and then cut again from right to left.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhh okay so i just line it up with the notch so i can re-set the bit with out pulling the bit away from the comm!!!!! yes i get it, so how many passes should i make to get a perfect comm? and how many times can you cut a comm before its just not worth it anymore

You'll know when you've made enough cuts when all the sharpie is gone,it may take a few cuts but just keep marking the com with your sharpie until the markings are all gone in one single pass,actually I use a dry erase marker but a sharpie pen works just as well.One notch on your lathe should equal 1/1000's.Go here and it will explain and show you in detail about cutting your com. http://www.motortuningsecrets.com/

this is probley gonna sound like a really retarted question but what sound should the lathe make when im actually cutting? i just figure if i know what sound to listen for and i hear something diffrent i will know right away
