So what if you tell your charger that it's looking at a 5000mah Li-Po and press the button with a 3200mah batt hooked up, ie charges at 5 amps instead if 3.2 amp on a 1C charger. These chargers all look at a peak voltage and capacity is 'just' a number; right/wrong ??

You might kill the long life of the pack charging at that rate.

Default Next version Orion LiPo

Since part of ROARs original rational for not allowing LiPo's had to do with dimensional differences, I am guessing that the next generation of Orion LiPo might look like a NiMh side by side pack and match the NiMh dimensions. Just a guess and I hope so as that will make use in current six cell cars (including the Corally Phi) much easier.

I just hope that Orion can do something to get the weight closer to that of the NiMh to address the balance problems we encounter.

We are anxiously awaiting release of the new product launch.

Where did you hear that? I talked to the technical director about it in Feb / March and that wasnt something he said.

I said I was guessing. I have read Mr. Blacks most recent post several times and he said different shape case. Then I was reading some old articles on LiPo on Red RC and it said that one of the original reasons that ROAR did not make LiPO legal was it did not conform to the dimensional requirements. If I was a product manger at Orion, I would make a case that looked like a side by side NiMh pack, but I'm not a product manager for Orion. It is just my guess and hopes.

What have you heard?

I have been charging my 4800's and my 3200's at a 2C rate for several months now (Thats 9.6 and 6.4 amps respectively for our math challenged readers). It makes it a lot easier to repeak to full capacity before each round.

I agree that a 2C charge rate could possibly reduce the life expectancy, but they last so long that I don't mind losing a bit off the longevity side to make sure I am at 8.4 volts before each qual and main.

BTW, I have been runnig the same 4800 for about a year and a half with no problems and it still keeps me in the hunt. Even after charging at 2C for the last 3-6 months.

Not trying to contradict you STLNST, jsut providing some more info

That's what I've been hearing from the guys who have been testing out lipos at my local track. Haven't seen any issues with it yet.

The main concern was safety and lack of familarity with the technology. Obviously there are safe and not safe lipos and that dont have the means to determine which is which within the organization. So they really just need to understand more about it.

I won't make a blanket statement about that for all chargers. I do know that on an ice or checkpoint charger you can bump the amps up to 2c by telling the charger its a 9600 or 6400 MAH battery and then just limit the charge capacity to 50%. It ahs worked for the last couple months of wekly racing with lots of practice thrown in . . .

Has anyone had there 3200 pack short out and mess up the ESC and motor at the same time? This was a new pack charged only 4 times on a ice charger. It also happened after charghing the car -plugging everything up -going to tech and turning the esc switch to on. Then puff- game over.

Is the battery still Ok ?

What I`m asking is how do you know the battery shorted first instead of the Esc ....
