Welcome to the XRAY X12'17 Thread & Wikipost! Here you will find some useful info, tips and tricks as well as setups that are used by several team drivers. Many of us run the X12'17 on high bite carpet and with most US tracks going to the new black CRC carpet, most setups from here out will be developed for those high bite conditions.

Tips & Tricks:
Some racers notice slop developed in the front end over time. One method to reduce/remove this, as pointed out by some of our friends in Europe is to score the inside of the plastic front pivot ball (where the kingpin goes through) with a sharp xacto blade. Usually 4 scores at 12, 3, 6 and 9 will do. Alternative options can be found listed below.

As with any 1/12 pan car, a smooth operating suspension is critical to performance. It is recommended to polish your kingpins & hinge pins using a dremel or a drill and some sort of polish (IE Gravity polish or Mothers Aluminum polish will work). If you find that your suspension has a bind, you may look at using a reamer or drillbit to make sure the holes are clear of any flashing or debris. The only place this may happen is at the upper hingepin, which is 2mm dia.

For stock racing we usually find ourselves looking for a little more steering. One trick that some of the stock drivers have done that seems to help is lowering the graphite plate that the servo & shock mount to. To do this, you will need the 17mm standoffs from VBC and the servo mounts from the 2015 or earlier X12. Be careful that the servo mounts do not sit crooked on the plate when attaching it; a 0.2-0.5mm shim will help ensure it sits perfect on the graphite plate. Part numbers can be found below.

they are 46 mm out of the packet. We all run them new out of the packet in aus. low grip no need to true them down

We raced today on a big open nitro track for the first time and were in the high 80s low 90mm for rollout (80 spur 48-52 pinion) 64 pitch

What height do you usually run on asphalt?

outdoors asphalt, we run BSR spec front, xxpink or pinks rear tires out of the package and run cars at 4.5-5mm. as tires wear over (3-4 at track i run on) several races i have gone as low as 3.7mm.

I no longer hate the rear ride height adjustment. It's not wonderful mind you but if you remove the rear axle like you would on a car with the plastic ride height inserts... fiddling with the shims is much easier with the axle assembly removed.

only way to do it. Undo the non drive side and then do each carrier independently

Exactly. I feel a bit silly for not realizing this until now LOL. Shims like the front would still be awesome however. VBC did it on their car.

I just bought one of these to get into 1/12th racing. Is there any spares or parts I should consider stockpiling?

Assuming you don't have a local supply of X-ray parts, there really isn't one single component that is a weakness on this car. Since you are just "getting into" 1/12, I would recommend having spare front kingpins, axles, and carriers. Basically anything on the front end that will see some extra impact while you adapt your driving style.
Also keep extra spur gears handy. The 64pitch are fragile when things are rough at first.
Other than that, X-ray product is worth the extra dough. They are tough little cars.

Yeah, I really broke very few parts on this car. Most of my “breaks” were things like screws pulling out...when I placed alu or titanium in the wrong place...learning curve.

Agree with the above post, though.

I have the Xray solid rear axle and have a question about spur gears. It appears that this axle on accepts Xray spur gears. I have tried a few other brands but they don’t seem to fit the Xray axle. Does anyone have a list of spur gear brands that will work with the solid rear axle? Or am I doing something wrong trying to fit a Kimbrough or Axon spur gear.

Thanks!
