Default Best cheap mod esc (2wd buggy)

Hi guys
Thinking in testing waters into the mod game, having only raced stock so far.
What would be the best cost effective ESC to get started? All my escs are Hobbywing, have the lcd programmer. Is there any version comparable to the Justock that runs mod?

Thanks

I have a HW V3.1 120a that was working great until a servo with shorted out lead killed it. Im about to send it in for service. I don't think they are sold new any more but it was/is a great esc. Im going to send it in to get fixed here soon. Hopefully its not that expensive. I want to say it was about $130-140 new last december.

Theres a 120a quickrun version thats like $60 but I don't know if it will be as smooth as the higher end racing esc's. 2wd buggies are sensitive to how good the esc's brakes are so it depends on your class if thats a big factor or not.

Other than that esc's get near the $200 range quickly to run mod. I just looked earlier as Im going to be running more mod classes soon.

The SkyRC Toro120 would be my pick, I don't think you can beat it bang for buck. RCMart are doing it for USD68 including shipping. The program card is pretty cheap too.

If buying new nothing beats the skyrc ts120a for the money. They are under $70 shipped and there a copy of the hobbywing v3.1.

Sky RC brand did not last for me, HobbyWing has stood the test of time. I have a V3.1 that is a couple years old and still going strong... the Sky RC stuff didn't last more than 6 months in my cars

Since the V3.1 is discontinued, I would probably go with the XE Run Stock Spec which is rated for up to a 6.5T motor:

I don't have a TS120 but I do have a SkyRC TS150 that I got in 2015 and it's still running strong. I have always been pleasantly impressed with their products.

the cheapest mod esc appears to be that hobbywing quicrun 120A model that looks like a rebadging of an older hobbywing race ESC. Its like $50 or so.

HobbyKing sells the X-Car 120A ESC which is compatible with the HobbyWing program card. It was first brought to market by Brushless Hobbies (around 2012'ish) as a rebranded HobbyWing but with lower quality components. After too many duds and not honoring a warranty, Brushless Hobbies would eventually go out of business. HobbyKing continues to sell the same product and I have had better luck with the X-Car than I have had with the SkyRC junk where the X-Car esc's would last about a year before they started giving me problems. SkyRC gave me problems in about 3-6 months of use.

HobbyWing branded products typically last several years and when I have had a HobbyWing product fail, I have been able to order parts to repair it or have sent in a bad ESC outside of warranty for a deep discount. Very few brands offer this level of service.

If you can't afford HobbyWing and need something to get you by for short term, then I would recommend X-Car, but save up for HobbyWing quality to replace the X-Car when it goes out.

***UPDATE***
Here's the link for the ESC mentioned above, definitely worth it to pay a few bucks more to get higher quality components from the OEM
HobbyWing QuicRun 120A - Also available through HobbyKing

Just looked at that Hobbywing, what's a good alternative that is ROAR approved and includes a blinky mode?

here is the list of ROAR apporved escs when in blinky mode. From here you should be able to pick out various escs and see what ones will fit your needs for mod:
