tamiya grey ones are better, but you are correct that they need to be cut, the x ray ones are a little lose on the durango ball ends, the spec r ones fit perfectly as well, I use all tamiya ones, with tamiya shocks, and now fitting the 418 suspension on the car, just waiting for some parts, now that I think about it should have bought a 418, lol, but just cant get over the white diffs.

I also like the HPI Camaro and J71 (and the HPI Cuda, but that body is almost impossible to find now). Currently racing the J71 and love it.
Always a good decision to ask the guys where you are racing what they think works best, but the beauty of VTA in my opinion is to create a car you think looks great.

I might end up sanding down the Durango ball cups and then using the associated ball ends. I'll see what happens.

Yeah, I think when they use the Tamiya ball cups they also use the Tamiya ball ends. What I want is to just replace the ball cups if possible and use the Durango ball ends. I have some Lunsford ones coming, and I'll see what they do compared to the Durango stock ones.

UPDATE: I just finished replacing all of the ball cups and sanding down all the ball ends. Wow no slop and now I can't wait to race it

what is the benefit of putting a gear diff
versus the spool in the front
versus the spool in the front

Front spool is locked, so the inner and outer doesn't rotate at different speeds. This creates wheel scrub, so you carry less corner speed thru a turn. While the spool is great in Mod or huge outdoor tracks, at indoor tight carpet tracks you will find running a front diff allows for more steering and speed in the twisty stuff.
