Default 17.5 Non-Ramp... FACT vs. Fiction

Hello all,

With the dissemination of ramping in the ROAR classes, I'm wondering what everyone has been seeing at their local track regarding the non-ramping stuff. What motors/esc combos have been successful at your local track? What gear ratios? I've heard of people making mods to their slipper clutches to try and get smaller spur gears on, etc etc.

Trying to get a feel for what I might need to purchase to get my whip running all flossy and ish.

I'm sure that if someone really has found the hot setup, they'd probably be reluctant to share it... but I figure it's worth a shot!

What do you mean by non ramp? Is that no esc timing? I have not heard that term.

No timing stock class 17.5 motor, gear it until your at around 160 degrees at the end of the race. If the motor isnt hot at the end of a run your not working it hard enough.

I've ran 3 different speedos and a few different motors with no timing.

GTB2, Havoc & Mamba Max Pro.

Speedo-wise (relative to the motor) all about the same. Some have more bells and whistles, better BEC, whatever you are looking for, but in the end, they perform pretty closely.

Motor-wise, I have seen big differences, even between same manufacter/same model. Novak SS 17.5, had one that was very fast, one very slow. Losi Xcelrion same, fast one and slow one. Trinity Duo 1 was really fast (after adjusting the limited timing advance).

Biggest difference I saw was with burst rate (C) on the lipo, and smooth driving...I now only run my Losi shorty pack (60C) when running no timing 17.5. Lightens the car up and just feels really quick.

I run a 22 geared @ 35~37/72 or my RC10CE geared @ 33~35/75.

Using a duo 3 I crank the end bell timing all the way up then gear as high as I can and still have enough torque to clear all the jumps. Usually 31/72 or 32/72.

What do you mean "fact vs. fiction"? There is no secret, no magic, no myths, no "hot setup"... it just means you are running 0 timing in the ESC, that's it. You will gear taller than if you used dynamic timing increases... how much taller depends on 100 variables

I'll be running mine at Norcal this weekend in blinky mode for the first time there. I hope I'm in the ball park motor wise. Time to Show folks that the Tekin motor is a contender as well

when I ran spec-stock buggy last season my Losi xxx-cr was geared 35-76 with a Orion v2 17.5/Tekin RS in blinky mode of course, my motor had the external timing ring cranked......car was stupid fast.

If you think that you're gonna be competitive with whatever motor and whatever esc, you're wrong. There will be a motor that emerges as the hands down favorite. It's the nature of stock racing... it's always been, and it always will. I saw it happen when we raced brushed motors, when we all transitioned into brushless, when the SPX hit the market with its mild timing capabilities, and again when the Tekin dominated because it offered the most sophisticated ramping setup options. There is always a flavor of the week for stock racing. In fact, that's why brushed stock racing at big races often use handout motors! (But even then, people were using other springs and brushes to get that extra little bit of oomph out of them)

At the top echelon of racing, it WILL matter what motor I'm running... so i'm using this forum as a means of surveying and asking people what they've been successful with or what they've seen at their local tracks yield success. I don't have the money to buy every 17.5 out there, nor the time to go out and test each one.

Driving clean will only get you so far in stock racing... you gotta have the whole package. The guys in front will have found a couple tenths a lap, which will equate to seconds at the end of a 6 minute run.

FACT.

^^^^ I agree, I like stock class racing, at the club level. For most club level drivers, the speeds in the stock class make for some good racing, better racing than if most of these guys were to run mod. This is the part that sucks, once the top club guys reach the point that the driver isn't the major factor anymore (as in the top few drivers are all good and can all run up front) it turns into a money game, best, latest and greatest motor of the week club..

If you can drive~ mod classes show driver skill, stock classes show who has the fattest wallet...
