The New Werks B5 .21 Racing Engine
#3527
The B5 makes more power in the low end and midrange then even a Picco..So its not lacking bottom by any means...right off idle it has great pull, at 15000 RPM the engine is already making 50 oz/in of torque, I don't know how much more low end you could want.... If someone has a B5 lacking low end I would be looking for the propblem with the setup, tune ,clutch or engine, as a properly tuned and setup B5 is a beast down low...

I am about to break in my motor. This will be my first nitro break-in (car)..I understand there are many way/viewpoints on how to do it. I know the procedure I am going to use but has it been your experience to start with the factory settings. I have read Ron's method but got very confused with all the needle adjustments..Thoughts? I have broken in many airplane 2-4 stroke motors but those have only one adjustment needle (high speed) that is used for break-in...thanks in advance

I am running the Fioroni Lightweight Vario on my B5. After a gallon of break-in on the street and finishing up on the track, the shoes show practically no signs of wear. Even the carbon shoe hasnt started rolling over! Its a really good setup!
I would highly recommend setting it up in the #2 position, unless the track has tons of traction. I had it on the #3 position (stiffest), on a dry/loose track and the car was a handful. Switched it to the #2 position (took less than 5 minutes to make the change), and it was killer! I am really happy with this clutch.
I used the Ascendancy clutch bells (13T - 14T), and they work great with the Vario.

I can vouche for the runtime of a B5... This weekend was the roughest weekends... For the A-main my engine was nowhere near where it needed to tune wise(due to having tank issues all weekend). And I pitted at 9 minutes on my first round of pit stops and I wasn't on fumes (Shane Racer can tell you that) and Mo can tell you I'm about the hardest guys on fuel milage.
And with all those issues and starting 2 laps back due to a early crash and it cause the engine to quit on the 1st lap and my pit guy had no clue I wasn't racing and was on the end of pit road.I still came back to a 4th in the main.

Well unless I read it incorrectly Mo just got done saying in his post that he can go 11:30. And as far as the low end power is concerned if you think the mte has more then your smoking crack. That engine is quite similar to our b7-pro so I have a couple of years under the belt running them and know their performance quite well. Again I'm not knocking the motor but the two are completely different engines with completely different power bands and run times. In a nutshell the B5 is going to have better fuel efficiency and better bottom to mid. The mte is going to have worse fuel consumpion and more upper end power. So if your running on flowing European tracks then it will be an advantage, if your running on US style supercross style tracks then I'd much rather have the bottom and mid. Toss on top of that just about anyone can do 9 to 10 minutes with the B5 versus 8 minutes with the mte and in a 30 minute main you can do it with 2 pits to possibly 2 and a splash versus a full 3 stops with the mte. You have to be quite a bit faster to make up the time lost by an extra pit stop! And as far as "it's good for two bills" and "it can get the job done", I wonder how many speeds, nova's and other high dollar mills it "got the job done" on last weekend between Mo and Kortz ;-P
You wanna call me out smoking crack well whatever.
I felt bad so i edited this. I should be better then that.

Naa i wasn't but now i am.
Mo was pitting at 7:30 soo stop lying. The thing is junk after a gallon and has no low end. I have one i took it out for that race cause it was garbage on the low end. The only person touching my needles is mazzara
so don't even go there on that one.
You wanna call me out smoking crack well whatever. Your boy was gonna get smoked if the other guy didn't flame out. The toothless guys in the pitlane repping your motor looked like they were on crack.
To be honest i was almost certain he would flame out again.
You couldnt be more wrong ron. I took your engine out on friday cause it was JUNK on the corners!!! Words out playa.....
no low end after a gallon.
Noo i just don't drink the Kool aid.
I bought one of these. My friends have them too. They all bought them. I feel bad cause they are gonna need new engines soon.
you wanted a engine discussion or comparison. You get what you pay for.
These things are good for a gallon.

I will have to disagree with u i have over 6 gal on my first one and it still pulls hard even the guys running Jammin 21s where saying how fast the engine was and it just keeps making power and i had just as much bottum as they did and if i ever had any problems with this engine it was my fault not the engines and i was running novas before this mill and the motor is faster all around than my $300-$400 novas and lack of bottum end thas a joke this motor rips hands down so if u ask me it is ur tunning that is off and i can get 10 minutes pretty easy on a tank of fuel.

I like my OS speeds too even if the B5 "got the job done" on them last weekend.
Engines are so much personal preference that it is pointless to argue about them. The B5 is a solid engine with a great price tag. They are flying off the shelves so that should be enough to show it right there. But they won't always be everyone's favorite engine. No one engine can do that. So I say let the B5 do what it has been doing, and don't take the criticism too seriously. Until it stops flying off the shelves, you have nothing to worry about.Just my opinion and yes I have yet to run my own B5.
Who knows, it may become my new favorite when that happens. It may not. Only time will tell.
