The New Werks B5 .21 Racing Engine

I have to say that I have been loving this motor. I have about a gallon and a half through it and I have had zero problems, not a single flame out and gobs of power. I finished 2nd in Truggy at a race at RC Madness on Sunday and the engine spun like a top all day.

Yeah Andrew great run. I had my first race with the engine this weekend. It was great, awesome power and really smooth. Before this I was running a $400+ engine and this thing ran just as good. I feel that this engine was even smoother. I had a ae 2035 pipe on it and should have the werks 2057 for my next race and can wait to see if it's even smoother. As earlier stated above I had a flame-out. I really don't consider it a flameout when the marshall covers the pipe. It didn't flame out the whole day. Even in practice it ran upside down for over a minute. I ran the werks #5 plug and was temped around 205-220 all day. As I race it more I will post more feedback, but I must say I'm impressed. It broke-in super easy as well. As for the high low idle thing. It's a balance between the needles. I don't know why so many people are stuck on this. I have had a ton of engines and almost everyone has done it. My b5 does not with the tune I have but it did have it a few times when I was tuning and honestly I really didn't worry about it. I did continue to tune to get a little more familiar with the engine and found more power. As a result that tune seemed to get rid of it. If it didn't I really wouldn't care. All down pit road I see the idles drop after some time. As far as I can see so far Ron has accomplished his mission. An affordable race engine that performs!!!!!

BTW, I thought I would chime in to say that I really need to try a 2013 or similar as the jp-4 really doesn't match the bottom end of the rpm range of this motor. I think that, because the jp-4 is a more restrictive pipe, that it floods the motor with more fuel than it needs on the pressure side. The motor seems rich, a lot, but it's not. If you keep it cleaned out, it works great, but it loads up quite easily if you're not right on on the low end needle and keeping it clean. I know the low end and high end is set right and the temps last night were in the 220 - 230F range when the motor was absolutely ripping, but just sit for a few moments, and it really comes off rich, even if the idle hasn't changed for being loaded up. The LSN sits right on the edge of either being able or not being able to load up at idle -- load up time is in the 20 second range. It's also difficult to get the motor to warm up because it seems so rich initially.
I'm betting these are all pipe things.

Currently the werks 2013 is out of stock, so I am thinking about the orion 2013. Is it really the same thing and how is it working for you? are you using it in a buggy or truggy...

With just over a half gallon on my B5/2057 combo, I was tempted to write up a pseudo review about how effortless the break in was, how easy it tunes, the impressive mileage, the HUGE bottom end, all for less than what I spent on my last engine...but as I thought about it more...there are thousands of posts here, scattered through hundreds of pages, most of which are singing the praises of the B5. There is absolutely nothing that I can add that hasn't already been said.
People, believe the hype! This engine is awesome! Ive paid much more for much less...it almost makes me regret the money Ive spent on other engines in the past. I say almost, because if I hadn't forked out the coin for the other engines, I wouldn't know how sweet this B5 truly is!

Mike,
I asked that question sometime back on this forum and was told they are the same pipe. I got it with an MTE engine and it performed great on that 5 port. I haven't recieved my B5 yet but I will be using it in a buggy. I can tell you that on the MTE I set my timer to 10 minutes and ran the buggy pretty hard for that time. when the timer went off I pulled the buggy back up to me and fuel just over the intank filter on the end of the fuel line. This was pretty much wide open punches back and forth on the flight deck. I would say running back and forth of about 80 feet? I will have to step it off but just a guess. The thing is, for me I won't nail it wide open that much on a track. I will have a smoother trigger finger. So let me take that back I was doing alittle of both come to think about it more. Sometimes taking it down to the end and stopping it to let it idle for about 10-15 sec then punch it and other times going down and making a nice wide turn and then slowly pinning it as straightened out. I would expect no less than 10 minute pits on a decent size track with this pipe and B5. Major difference is I have all the traction I could want right now but also, the MTE is not race tuned either. It is a little rich on both low and high. Just a tad but enough that if I were at a race or even practice, I would lean it some.

Hey Mike881, a shipment of 2013's went out to A-main today and they will be receiving them tomorrow. Not sure how long they are going to last but if you have an order in the cue you should be good. I have another shipment coming in next week also just as an fyi so there will be more available then if they sell out in the next couple of days.
Regards,
Ron

What is going on is that I am forced to set the low end needle to in a certain range to make it behave at idle (as we have many reports of JP pipes high idling) and that range doesn't agree perfectly with the rest of LSN operation. You can get real close, but it's not *just right* and it is easy, with changing conditions, to get off. I've paid special attention to the high speed setting as I have to completely take LSN out of the picture when tuning it by doing long back and fourth pulls.
The motor works great, I mean well enough to qualify 2nd over all in our expert group of buggy last night, the TQ, seconds a ahead of me, being a fully sponsored factory team driver, so the motor works well the way I tune it -- I just can tell it really needs another pipe as the one I'm using doesn't really match up to it well.

I'm not man, trust me. I'm working the best I can with two needles on a motor that doesn't match the pipe. That's really the bottom line. If you lean the bottom end much more it starts sitting in the 230 range idling ON THE BOX, doesn't want to idle well regardless of where you put the idle stop, never loads up, and wants to run on when returning to idle even when running an obviously fat top end. The top end is right on, I can do constant high peed back and fourth pulls and the temps are very stable and there is good smoke -- that is taking the low speed out of the picture.

I dont know I got a buddy thats running an 056 or 086 ofna pipe cant remember which one exactly and his actually idles as good as mine takes off as good as mine and has as much top end as mine. So if youve got a buddy with a different pipe you can try, give it a shot and see what happens....
