5.3v is like brand new on the AA's. That is not an issue. If you're having failsafe issues the problem is somewhere else, not in the radio's transmitter batteries.

It doesn't seem that difficult to do. Remove the battery holder and add an appropriate sized 2s lipo and BEC. I am surprised more people aren't doing this with all their radios.

the only trouble with lipo and a bec is you've really no idea from the radio's voltage monitor how much charge the battery has in it as it's a regulated output. regulators aren't 100% efficient anyway so you'd be losing power just to keep from overheating or blowing your radio

a 2s LiFe would probably work ok but LiFe doesn't hold as much mAh as NiMH for a similar size battery - an AA size LiFe is about 600-800mah so a 2s2p pack would only be 1200-1600mah - and the (2000-2200mah) LSD NiMHs should last very well in terms of cycles. These radios work on very low power so you should get very good runtimes out of AAs.

so there's just no reason to void the warranty, or run the risk of a "probably works" or spend money on a bec or other regulator solution or even crack your tx open when a simple pack of LSD aa rechargeables does the job well, can be charged by just about any charger, can be replaced easily and cheaply if they fail in the field - we are not in the days of 27mhz tx's that were awful on rechargeables or rechargeables that discharge themselves in a week or less anymore.

i also have DX3S, and i checked the current consumption of TX is - not greater than 120mA.
Now, all AA size rechargable batteries can offer more than 2000mAH.
So, by calculation, it should works for more than 14hours (2A/0.12A=16.6hr).
For my suggestion, you only needs to use the low self discharge type rechargeable battery (like SONY-white one) instead of NIMH one. Then, it should no need to recharge every week...

I've picked up a set of the Apple branded rechargeable batteries from the Apple Store. They are awesome and not a bad price. They are the low discharge type, and hold a charge for a very long time. I have 3 sets charged at all times and they never drain on me before I use them.

How about NiZn batteries?

guys you can run a 2s 7.4 lipo on the radio it will be fine and last forever

i have done many lipo mads to many radio's and not one has come back

i have also wanted to go lipo or life battery but the cost just didnt seem worth it. i have a set of cvs nihm 2450's that i paid $5 for last winter and they still work great. i charge them about every 3-4 race days and i race 2 classes.
