LIPO for DX3S
 

hey guy what lipo are you usuing for the DX3S.

None available, you will need to make one yourself


Get yourself a set of LSD (Low Self Discharge) Nimh's and they will last hours and not go flat when transmitter is turned off

Once you greatly minimize NiMhs self discharge, they are like a completely diff batt. I'm switching over to them as my rechargeable NiMh AAs wear out.

I've been using the ones by Powerex sold by Thomas.

I have used both the Medians and Sanyo Eneloops also from Thomas who have great service and fast delivery

I reccomend the MAHA 9000 chargers as well if you dont own one they are awesome, also from thomas

Been doing business with Thomas for years - was a heavy digi cam user and was lead to Thiomas when Powerex was winner of the AA rechargeable shoot out some camera group set up a few yrs back. I have had a 9000 charger since it came out and use it weekly with my camera/flash AAs. Still buying from Thomas but less than I used to since new camera is li-ion.

Thanks for the feedback on the HC LSDs, I'll be getting some on my next order.

DO NOT USE LIPO WITH DX3S!!!!
 

This radio is not rated at that high of a voltage and you WILL damage it if you modify it for use with LiPo batteries. This will also void your warranty too.

What about a LiFe battery. The voltage on that is about the same as the lithium AA batteries.

Chemical type isn't the issue, it's all about the voltage. I don't know what the exact voltage limit is but I know, speaking with the techs themselves, that LiPo is strictly beyond the voltage handling capabilities of this radio.

The LiFe battery nominal voltage is 6.6.
I use the DX3R anyway. I don't know if the circuitry will handle higher voltage and it really doen't matter too much as a set of duracells will last about 13-14 hrs anyway.

I wouldn't suggest it. Like I say I don't know the exact limits but know that the repair center guys pretty much said stick with AA's unless you like letting the magic smoke out of your gear...

I bought some AAs - Energizer lithiums. They're over 1.7v so using 4 of them you'd be putting 6.8+v in the tx.

You prob should stick with alkaline or rechargeable NiMh AAs if voltage is limited to ~6v.



Reason we told the OP to get the LSD rechargeables...

Is there some reason this radio sucks the life out of batteries so fast? I use good quality alkalines and the voltage drops off dramatically. I don't know if there is a low voltage alarm, but after one weekend, the voltage showing is about 5.3V on the screen and I start having my car going into failsafe because it is losing signal.

Put in a fresh set and all is good, but I'm getting tired of changing batteries every race weekend. I don't even do nitro any more with the long mains. My qualifiers are 6 minutes and mains are 12. I run two classes and maybe have one practice run for each on a race day. So that is maybe 75 to 80 minutes with the radio on and the batteries are shot????

It would be nice if you would check with the tech guys to see if the LiFe batteries would work. The voltage is significantly less than Lipo.
