Team Associated SC8 Setup and Tips

Im new to nitro and bigger scale trucks.
I got a used SC8... I love it, big bore shocks and dual discs
My question is regarding the diff setups, I am going through a tear down, check and clean before my next race.
What does it mean with the 7-10-7 on the diff set up? I like the sounds of these characteristics. throttle steering would be nice.
ALso what have been the findings on longevity and tuning of the stock ae 28? anyone tried a SH 28 on one of these rigs?
what about tires and rim combos too?
lo0k forward to following this post

the number that people are quoting is the weight of the diff fluid used in each of the three differentials going from front to back. For instance, I run 7-5-5 so I have 7000wt in the front, and then 5000wt in the center and rear.
I am running the stock motor and it works fine, no issues there and no hurry to change.
Wheels and tires you have a couple of different options. There are stock, then some are running stock wheels with the Switch tires like they run on the Slash and Slayer (I'm trying to get more info on this) and apparently you get better traction with the scale look then you do with the stock tires. Then there are 1/8 scale buggy tires. Which give you better traction and performance but takes away from the look and feel of the truck IMO.

Hi,
well picked one of these up and must say a great truck we run Xray normally but with them not having one decided to go for the SC8. I just cant put it down it is heaps of fun driving it how it squirms up the dirt track, The TTR .28 is a great engine for this truck im a bit of a TTr fan from way back if you want a bit more out of your SC8 get Engine modder to wave his magic wand over the engine and it will fly the TTr .28(AE .28) engine is very underestimated...
Other than that just love the thing even my young lad who is buggy mad came out and asked for a drive...lol I got the Red bull truck, One thing i did try was a set on Proline V3 wide M2 bow ties on the rear and M2 V2 up front must say it had all the grip that you could need, Any one else tried the wides on the race track yet ??

I'm going to end up with a 'Factory Team' SC8 as I'm starting with a RC8 buggy and adding all of the 'upgrades' that have been brought out since it's inception. Cost is about the same as a RTR but I wouldn't characteristically use the engine or electronics out of it anyway so I hopefully will be a bit ahead with a VERY cool truck!

.....guys, what can be expected with the SC8 when switching to the aluminum clutch shoes????....do they bite harder than the fiber shoes?.....do the aluminum shoes have a comparable life span to the fiber shoes???......just broke in my SC8 and already want to make changes......

By their nature aluminum shoes tend to 'hit' a bit harder then composite.....
BUT, that is as much controlled by the spring as it is the clutch material.....
From my experience running the narrower SC tires, a hard hit would not be a good thing in the majority of circumstances so you might want to stay with the standard shoes and play a bit with springs OR hang a set of aluminums on and play with springs to soften them up - which generally means a lighter spring like a .9.....
The wear of composite shoes is a 'bit' quicker then aluminum but the trade off is less maintenance. Neither set lasts forever!

and one thing I forgot in the post above is that it's not recommended to run composite shoes AFTER you have run aluminum shoes.... The aluminum gets hot and 'bonds' to the cluch bell - pretty much impossible to remove and not put 'waves' in the clutch bell. AND, if you don't get it all out it will drastically accellerate the wear of composite shoes. This certainly applies to anything - not just the SC8!
I've seen several of you are running big bore shocks on your SC8s - any advice on springs/oil/piston hole count/size???
I would presume that it's best to use the settings from the buggy as far as shock placement????? I know that the SC8 doesn't have as many shock mounting options as the buggy or truggy.....
At any rate, are they worth the money??? Improve handling???? Benefits???

Well had the first major strip down since getting this thing and have changed a few things.
Upgraded the servos and radio gear
Hitec 7955TG throttle and steering
Futaba 3Pk with spectrum Pro transmitter and receiver
Lipo and reg 2300mHa
This made the SC8 turn and brake then i wanted all day long i found the SC8 straighten up under acceleration with the standard servo......( i.e running full throttle around long sweeping corners)
I also purchased a TTr .28 bump start engine and am having it modded to get the top end happening and then bolting up a TTr 2035 pipe to suit. This should be just right in the power as the .28 is that closed off from factory it aint funny plus upgraded the front and rear bearings just for piece of mind.
Going to run 7,7,5 diff oils
Shocks will be the big bores but not sure on piston springs and oil for them yet, and have a clear shell on the way so when done ill post some pics up.
But what a great truck to drive so much fun and i hope they take off and become another great class, These trucks can be fast when they are sorted..

Does any one know are we stuck with the front and rear shock tower's that come with the truck or does any one know if you can bolt up the truggy ones, will it work or not.....

I found having a good read through this thread helped me with a set up. I'm trying the above one this weekend but will also try a few things up there so if it works I'll post it up. Hope to get some footage as well i have to run with the Truggys but am looking forward to it...

Greg Vogel at RC Driver has a set on his SC8 and says it allows some different and improved shock mounting locations - similar to the new towers for the RC8B - with the SC8 body mount holes. Nice stuff!

Well must say had the first weekend out racing with the truck, now i had to race with the truggies but out of about 12 Qualified 7 for the main so was happy with that.
I tried the kit tires and was not really happy with the grip in fact i would say if i had to run these tires i prob would leave the truck as the fun truck for bashing. But on the other hand running Proline V3 rims and tires made this for the most fun i have had on the track for a long time. Sure the truggies are quicker but every one was interested in the SC8 the way it looked so realistic running around the track. Wides on the rear really made the truck handle well i ran revolvers when the racing line blue grooved up, Up until then i was running bow ties in V3.
The rest of the truck i had 7,7,5 and shocks were threaded standard size but copper springs on the front and standard on the rear i think heavier springs will be just right in the rear end. I've ordered some softer sway bars so see what that brings. Other than that it was out the box gunna try some bits like hinge pins (captured) for easier setting up at the track.
The Thunder tiger engine ran flawless all weekend mated to a JP1 pipe had heaps of low to top end. Getting 7:45min till she ran out of fuel, 24kg hitec servos pointed it in the right direction every time and pulled it up as well. The hi life battery i was trying was what let me down in the 45 min final.(back to a lipo and reg for me)
Other than that had a blast with the SC8 a great class......

Has anyone tried a .21 in their sc8 if so I'm curious how it performs does it have enough grunt to get the truck around pretty well? It's time to replace my stocker and I would like to get better run times so I've been scoping out some of the .21 engines I might give the new werks b5 a try. Let me know what you think
