I also run a novak 13 tooth pinion. The novak pinions are really nice because they use a big gub screw that can be really tightened down without fear of stripping.
Does yours make a horrible grinding gear sound with the Novak pinion? Mine does! But if you swap it back out for a Losi or Robinson pinon, the noise is significantly reduced. The last race I ran my 8ight E at, had some people scratching their heads trying to figure out how something so fast and smooth, could sound so bad!

Actually, I have never run it with the losi pinion. It does make a little noise....not the smoothest sounding in the world.

Default Lower shock mount screws.

Don't forget that on the 8ight, any of them, the left rear and right front lower shock mount screws back out. I think it's XRAY that makes a reverse thread for this exact problem. The set screw in the bottom of the arm isn't even enough for some reason. I even tried putting a screw in the next hole that overlapped the shock screw and it still backed out. Until I get those reverse threaded screws I just added a generous amount of glue in addition to the extra screw and it's holding together well. Keep your car really clean and that will help you notice these things that go wrong earlier and more often.

I do a "Post-mortem" after every race, and have found little things that didn't quite take me out. A good once-over after several practice runs, usually indicates any issues that may creep up on you during a race. I've had my original nitro 8ight since they first came out. So I'm familiar with the car, and took a few preemptive steps before the first time i ran the new car. Heat shrink on the center CVDs is about all I had to do.

If they came that way from the factory, they need to go back to the drawing board because both of mine were backing out after the first day at the track. I tightened them and they were already coming back out after the first qualifier. That's when I resorted to the extra screw and later I had to add a drop of glue as well. I'd rather just have some reversed thread screws and be done with it.

Thumbs up

I just drove my Losi 8ight-E today for the first time and WOW...this thing has got tons of power! I still have to play around with the MMM ESC settings. I'm running a Neu 1512 2.5d/f 2050kv motor and a Flight Power 4S 5000mah Lipo. I'm also going to go down from a 15t pinion to 13t.

Here's a few pictures:

Man this car just keeps getting better. I finally messed with some tuning on the ESC tonight and finally settled on the Lowest motor timing and gearing back up to a 16 from a 15. The car was a rocket with more controllable power, and the motor temps were awesome. Anyone who is still having motor temps a little higher than what they like should try this.

I was curious if changing from 15 to 16 would mellow out the power without adding heat to the motor. I might give that a try.

What temp was your motor running at?

With a fan on it, the motor stayed at 120 - 125 for both of the 5 minute qualifiers.

The fan wasn't on it in the 10 minute main and it topped at 150. That was with a 17t pinion too! With the hardcase Losi lipo in the car it was stupid fast, much faster than the stock setup, but with a little less torque it seems. It just felt like all the power was going to the ground instead of translating to wheelspin. In fact for the first 3 minutes of the main I couldn't even drive the damn car because I was overshooting all the jumps. With a 16t pinion it will be perfect.

Are you adjusting the motor timing also?
