Default 4s Lipo for buggy

Having issues with my “top of the line” 4s lipos. One cell seems to go dead in all of them. Bought 3 6500 and 3 5200 zappers and all of them are now DEAD? Lost 5 of the 6 to a dead cell and finally tonight the last one puffed and broke the case. I don’t feel that they lasted near as long as my old batteries even though I always treated these way better. Always used the charger to put in storage mode after every race and never left them charged over night. My old batteries I just left them wherever they were at the end of the run and used them 4-5 years. They were a low C battery and I decided that when I got serious about racing I would buy the “better” battery. Well it seems the theory is better doesn’t make it last longer. So any suggestions on a good 4s lipo?

That is a shame, yet it happens. we first ran Orion, then Trinity, then SMC, now believe it or not, I just run the Zeee Lipos as can be found on Amazon. No issues so far, they are just a basic 6500mAh 80C batteries, I have also used two of their 2S 8000mAh 100C packs in 1:8 buggy as well. We have run them now for two years, no puffing. Never Charged above their mAh rating, and always properly Discharged for Storage. Have even used the 4S packs for 1:8 On Road as well. For their price, it was well worth it for us. We have also started to run them in the Started boxes for our Nitro Cars.

Maybe time to check your charger? Use a voltmeter to check output voltages and balancer voltages?
I have heard stories of people with failing batteries and after a good check it seemed to be the charger causing it.

I would agree that if all of them have failed, there is something in common with all of them that is causing the failures (whether it's the charger or something shorting on the vehicle). I have been using Lectron lipos and I had one puff up on me after only a few uses. I contacted Lectron about it. Not to complain, but to try to understand what I did wrong for that one to fail but not the others. They said it was likely a manufacturing defect and replaced it. However, having all of yours fail, that's not likely to be a manufacturing defect.

So...I am using a Hitec 4 port charger. When I try to charge the battery it would not start. Go to the battery meter option and it would show one dead cell. After reading the comments in this thread I decided to drag out my old Cellpro Powerlab 8 charger. Plug it in and ........it brought the cell back and works fine now. So I guess it is time to figure out how the hitec charges the battery fine....race and then it shows one dead cell? At least now when it happens I can throw it on the Cellpro charger and bring it back!

Are you using the old X4-80 charger from Hitec, or a newer one like the X4 Pro? We have been using the X2 AC Plus now for a rather longer time, and had an issue with the Balance Board inboard connector not working right on the # 2 charge port. As such we sent it back for repair to Hitec RCD/ USA no issues. Their support was awesome.

Given them a shout at https://hitecrcd.com/support/warranty-service

I think 1/8 IC Fan could be onto something there, I've had failures of both balance boards in chargers (occasionally a pin will push back, or internal solder joint will crack), and also of balance connector pins on batteries. No real fault of the products, usually both after many (hundreds) of cycles of usage, but with a little resoldering and repinning everything works again.

Puffing and breaking the case sounds like a more legitimate failure though. I've definitely seen similar things with expensive lipos puffing somewhat quickly, but I've got a few turnigy blue lipos nearing 400 cycles and still running great + not puffed, albeit with the max capacity slowly having reduced after 250-300 cycles or so.
