If I go to practice at my local track once a week for 6 months that's only 24 days of maybe what amounts to an hour of actual practice. For a total newbie, racing against guys with on average about 10 years of experience and running $500 chassis etc, that isn't much practice! Again though, I do agree that it's a good idea to get out there and run at least in the novice class to get a feel for the whole racing environment. Thanks!
Set up has been mentioned a whole lot. Until you develop a feel for what the car is doing on the track, as long as your chassis is square, you're doing well. Work on getting around the track and being consistent. Then start working on "your" setup (which you'll chase for the rest of your hobby days).
Good luck to you. Make a lot of friends at your track and every track you visit. They will be lasting and some of the best friendships you'll develop in your life.
You can practice all you want, what it doesn't teach you is how to drive in traffic. It doesn't give you the opportunity to follow one of the fast guys and watch and feel his line for as long as you can (even if it's only a straight and a turn to start). It doesn't teach you how to be passed and what to do should you turtle yourself or another driver.

Thanks Billy, do you know Jim Oliva? I use to race with him back in the day. He raves about Windy City. I've only seen pictures but the place looks amazing. I have lived in Cancun Mexico for 10 years since I retired but......we are moving back to the USA but most likely the gulf side of Florida. So I'm hoping that there are some tracks in the Sarasota area that I can check out and see if maybe they have an "Old Fart" class with marshals???? LOL.
My dad is 78 and just got back into racing, he's lucky enough to still be able to marshall. However, I don't want that or anyone else to stop racing for that reason. I can guarantee you there are others that feel the same way at most tracks. There are plenty of young kids to marshall for you, so please get out there and race if you want to!

In the center of the state, you'll find Full Throttle RC Raceway in Kissimmee, and Nuggets Ranch RC in Arcadia....both are great! Move towards the east and you have awesome asphalt facilities in Royal Palm Beach and in Valkaria (my home track). Then move further up and you have 386 Raceway in Daytona for more indoor carpet racing. Great group up there!
Then there's the FSEARA Series which travels the state and crowns the state champions. Lastly, the Snowbird Nationals every year in Kissimmee. I invite you to join in on the Florida Racing forum. If you like to race on-road, then here you'll be able to find whatever suits your taste. We're very lucky here. Hope to race with you in the future!
Never underestimate how much simple stripes can tune up a paint job. One of the other racers liked the result so much he got me to stripe his too. During the race day, yet another racer took notice. So I wound up doing a 3rd set

HPI and Hot Bodies were split up each acquired by a company about 2 years ago. HPI products dried up after their acquisition. Recently it seems that is resuming parts and supply. So VTA rims and tyres may become available again.
I don’t think HPI is making any new VTA...I think Protoform is caring the VTA torch for wheels and tires. What I see now is that the HPI old stock and the PF new tires are all VTA legal at this time....
joe? You didn’t know this!? Really? I thought you knew everything!?
