The Arrma has Throttle EPA which means you can adjust how much power is available. Perfect for a beginner to start with less power to learn how to drive. Kind of like the Traxxas training mode, but better since you can adjust it much better and slowly add power

I think the Helion Contakt is a deal at only $59 ($47 scratch and dent on Amain).

It includes an inexpensive Lipo, charger and control.

It was originally priced at about $160 which is kind of expensive.

As others mentioned he might break things, the parts are available and very cheap as far as the hobby goes. Just about everything you will have fun fixing for your grandson.

I would also recommend the 2wd Arrma Granite a cheap more modern alternative to the Traxxas Stampede. I would start with brushed til the beginner learns to drive a little better and upgrade at that point.
