hi,
I'm looking for ideas for a very basic RC monster truck for my son for xmas and looking for recommendations please. He is only 6.
I have no clue what a decent beginners one would look like. Looking for the very cheapest decent RC Monster truck you can get basically?
Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance
Tom

2WD may not work well for you depending on what kind of terrain you want to run on. For a 6 year old first R/C I would also look at a brushed motor. It will be slower and cause much less damage until he learns to drive.

Arrma is solid brand and has lower prices than Traxxas but Traxxas has a lot more parts support if that's important/available nearby. I'd recommend a 2wd monster truck since it'll be cheaper than a 4wd and if later your son is still into RC stuff, then a 4wd brushless could be the next stop. My original truck is a 2wd Stampede that I still find myself reaching for when going to bash at the skatepark (despite having 10 others to choose from).

For a 1/10th scale hobby grade monster truck 170 is pretty cheap. Now if you're ok going smaller than 1/10th scale and still want hobby grade you can get something like the helion Animus for 100 bucks and get a 4wd truck. Or even cheaper and get the Contakt for 60-70 bucks. That's about as cheap as hobby grade rc cars go. Anything below that and you are in toy grade. If you have a hobby town usa near by the helion stuff can be found in store but it does break parts more than other companies.
Just an FYI hobby grade RC cars do break. Some definitely more than others but they do break. So be ready to buy parts in the future and some light wrenching. If you don't want to buy parts or fix cars get a toy grade car. They can still break but since they only go 2-10mph there is less chance of hitting something hard and fast.

A brushed stampede would be a great starting point. Parts are readily available and the nice thing about it is that there is a training mode on the speed control where you can run it at 50% power, then when he is ready you can bump it up to 100%. You can also add a lipo battery later to add more power. It's truly a vehicle he can grow with.

Another good option - the ECX AMP MT. There is even a "Build to Drive" kit version with a clear body. Kit comes with all the same electronics as the RTR, so it is still kind of ready to go. $129, assembled or kit. Brushed power is great for a small kid. My 6 and 7 year olds do great with brushed RC's up to about 15-20 mph. Above that, they have issues...

BTW, My oldest son started in RC on a brushless ECX Torment (SCT). All the ECX 2wd's are 90% the same. My son's Torment to a beating, and had very few issues.
