I tried a set of sweep inserts and found the tire to be too hard. Thats why I removed them. That and according to the powers that be, they are illegal. I get better performance out of the stock inserts.

I'm using the medium aqua inserts for outdoor asphalt... there are different types of inserts available for various track surface conditions. We are very fortunate to have an RD who is understanding on which rules make more sense to implement locally.

I had the same inserts, but I am running on carpet, so thats maybe where the difference in performance was. I think testing different inserts is cool, but ill let deeper pockets do that until a cocensus is reached on what is best. Until then the stock inserts worked better for me.

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the spec tire?

Although we use USGT as a baseline for our rules, our club is still open treaded tire. I'd say the majority of us are gravitating to the spec tire (and inserts). There are some club members who still have a stash of belted X-patterns. Our RD has taken a couple liberties under this statement from the USVTA/USGT rule page: "All decisions of the race promoter or track owner are final."

just soaked some in acetone, and it does not affect the stock inserts

That will vary greatly, depending on your choice of rim.
