Default Spektrum dx4s switch problems

Ok, just received a dx4s for a birthday present. I have it bound to my Traxxas Telluride truck. The throttle and steering work just fine, but the problem I'm having is getting the other channels to link up. What I'm attempting is to have my lights on aux1 and my winch on aux2. In the manual it states I can change the functions of the switches on my controller. I've figured out which switch I want to use for these accessories and changed their function in the controller, however when I activate or deactivate the switch the desired effect is non-existent. Can anyone help or talk me through what I'm doing wrong. I've tried re-binding after each attempt and this still doesn't help.

Binding it again is fruitless if throttle and steering work.

If AVC is active (turned on), then the aux.channels will not operate.

Ok update, just got off phone with horizon hobby, and figured out what is wrong. My lights and winch don't have sense wires, only power and ground. (Insert sarcastic voice here) " well damn, now I have to go buy a led and winch control box. Darn!" Any suggestions on a good one to buy?
