just got my 4x4 rtr today. this is my first venture into electric. so far this truck seems way more complicated than my mgt 8.0. i want to check and change the diff fluids. any tips on how to remove the diffs without taking the whole truck apart? afraid i'll mess something up by taking it all apart. thanks

Get your manual out because your going to need it. There is no easy way to tear this truck down for the first time unfortunately. The good news is that the truck rarely brakes even under extremes. I haven't had mine apart since I built the FT version so I can't tell you the quickest way.

also the 4x4 rtr lipo combo now has the sc1200 esc rather than the sc700. tower hobbies and the ae website both still have it coming with the 700. not sure if that means a whole lot but incase someone is thinking about getting one this info could help

Take the shock tower of first, then take the gearbox out. No need to take the hinge pin mounts off. I'll take some pics tonight.

I don't recall where in the thread, but there is information and a few images of what to take apart where to get to the diffs. Also, there are a few diff building guides on here, definitely worth a look, especially ones using black grease of similar to help seal the diffs.

When you do examine the diffs, make sure they have the correct shimming that AE went to, 0.5mm under the sun gear, NO shim when this i there between the diff cup and the diff case.

If you do not have that, call AE right away and get them to send you some before running the truck. They ship very fast for this issue.

Also, can you tell us if your diffs came with the new non-brass inserts the cups go into?

I would also like to see the images showing how to take the diffs out.

Merry Christmas and happy new year to you guys!

V3 center dif is in the making! Should have the CAD work done in a few weeks!
  • Billet Delrin machined 61t spur gear or MOD1 equivalent (only one gear will be available)
  • spur gear will have a center bearing
  • ring locators will be attached to the spur
  • going to try and have the outside assembly oring sealed
  • also working on a spec spring

Cost will obviously be slightly higher but this thing will be wicked!!

How opposed are you guys to switching to MOD 1 pinions? I know it is a change but i can machine a much nicer, stronger tooth profile with MOD1 and since Delrin is more efficient than molded plastic performance will not suffer. On top of that its pretty hard to strip a MOD1 spur gear even with a loose setting!
You guys are the reason for the V2's success so your input is valuable to me. RCShox is merging with another company for 2014 so new machines are coming and FINALLY i will have some help, up until now its been just me.

Locally SC has been dead for this year! So we will need some dependable fast and very technical test guys to help in the development of the V3 Cdif and i have a few more items for this truck in the works!

+1 vote for Mod1. Other than the stronger teeth on the gear and being able to share pinions with other vehicles that use the pitch, namely 1/8 electric, any other benefits you think like gear size, etc?

Congrats on the merger too. I would love to see if you can get back on that idea about the counter gear again. Maybe a mod1 gear size would help?

Different gear pitch. It's what is used on 1/8 buggies and a lot of the 4x4 SCTs like the SCTE and Tekno SCT410.

99% of the difs i sell are 62t and a handfull of 60's so IMO really only 1 spur is needed at least for now. Like you said everyone already has MOD1 pinions anyway and you can get them to fit 1/8 shafts.

yeah, I can see guys wanted to stick with what they already have if they are 32P setup, but, considering the range of pinions you actually use on the SC10 4x4 isn't much unless you really start to work on the opening of the motor mount, I personally would prefer mod1 if it was me.

Cool. Even though he doesn't "race" it as much, Shark would be one I would look into sending to.
