Not really needed but in hard crashes they can break. They do wear out over time as well.

Sorry, but are you saying that it's difficult to remove the pinion gear that is attached to the motor ? I'm just starting my 44.2 build now, but I have a 44.1 that I am very familiar with, and I have zero issues changing a pinion quickly and easily. The only thing I need to do is looses the 2 motor clamp screws so I can set the mesh correctly, but other than that, I can get to the set screw on the pinion w/o any issue while everything is still mounted as if ready to drive the car. Can you take a pic to show/explain what you mean ?

Why wouldn't it be ? It's just a motor speed dude. Same size & dimensions as a 17.5 or a 5.5 . ROAR Nationals ran a stock 17.5 NT 4wd buggy class. Although majority of folks run mod.
Some people start off with slower motors in 4wd buggy to get a grip on things. A lot of recommendations for 10.5 if you're looking for fast but under control to learn on. I just dropped a 6.5 in mine and drove it slower to learn, then started winding it out as I got more comfortable.
