As someone who just got an SC10 (in trade), I am confused a bit by all the talk about springs. Why not run the AE springs? Why put Losi springs on it? The Avid springs sound cool, but if they are mimicking the AE rates, etc, why switch?

My SC10RS gear diff is NOISY. Is this just the nature of the beast or did I not grease something properly? When I first got this thing it was quiet as a church mouse and after I re-shimmed it, it was quiet for a while but now it's just nasty noisy until I pin it, then all I hear is the motor . When I re-shimmed it, I packed grease in it (standard black wheel bearing grease). What's the deal? Do I need a ball diff?

They hit the shocks, among other problems.

Why put Losi springs on it?
They are cheap and don't hit the shocks, but for the front they don't have one stiff enough.

Because they don't hit the shocks, and the rates are correct.

My truck handles exactly the same with big bores as it did with the AE springs, UNTIL I land it off a big jump. Plus, I feel better in the pits because the springs didn't rub the coating off the shocks.

So, you are using big bore springs on standard shocks? How do you make that work?

Thanks for the response Craig

RCNurse, I'm using the stock AE springs at PRCR, consistently one of the faster SC10 at PRCR. Tried big bore springs and did not feel a reason to keep them on.

I use AE springs and my truck handles great. I have no issues handling the jumps, bumps and corners.
It comes down to personal preference.

I am. V1's even.

How do you make that work?
http://www.rctech.net/forum/10092874-post8971.html

I am using the Ghea collars, 22 buckets, TLR 22 rear orange buggy springs fronts, and Kyosho Red rears. If you don't like a chassis that will cut real hard, and don't drive with the tip of the throttle, I'm going to warn you - you won't like it. If you have a heavy throttle or are hard on the wheel, it will step out on you without hesitation. It is, however, very quick. And it allows the driver lots of options around backmarkers.

Thanks for the response Craig
You're welcome. I'd add that unless you are racing a track with really big jumps, the stock springs are fine. We in California seem to be the home of Supercross style tracks/jumps.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if I got a chance to run on a parking lot like PRCR I'd almost agree. Kody is now running Kyosho reds on all four corners.

http://teamassociated.com/pdf/cars_a..._JC_Spring.pdf

Some users need a "Factory Team" stamp before they feel it's okay to do something, I've had big bore springs for about four months now and run roughly the same rate in the rear as Kody. I haven't had a set of red fronts to check, but the yellow fronts I borrowed from another user here were the stiffest spring I've ever checked wheel rate on the SC10 (I rated roughly 35 pairs of springs); and they acted as you'd expect on the track. If you like AE reds in front, Kyosho yellows are likely the ticket for you.

I'd guess Kyosho Reds would be like AE golds, but like I wrote earlier, I've never seen or touched a set so that's just speculation, and I wouldn't speculate with your or my wallet.

The Avid stuff will be bomb, I'm certain.

I completely agree. Maifield's ROAR nats setup works stunningly well locally, but I think the big bores have some real potential. If you like it better, that's all that matters.

You guys should check out the B4.1 thread, seems like nobody over there has been running standard springs for the past 8 months.

All I am saying is he's better off spending $6.50 on springs that work just fine then to mess with big bore springs, collars, etc. He's a newer racer and should be more focused on getting track time then throwing big bores on his truck.

If you'd like me to send over my PRCR/Daves set-up, let me know

Again, I agree. If you have a track where the jumps are small, I agree even more.

It would not be an exaggeration to say I spent a couple hundred dollars (on parts I'm not going to use) and have about 20-30 hours into checking wheel rates to find what matched the AE blue front and green rear springs.

A more sane user could just use the AE springs and be done with it.

I think that's a good plan. My lap times were identical between the AE and big bore springs, but where it mattered is the big bore springs land big jumps better.

On the SC10 I started with Losi rear silver on the front and Losi rear white in the rear. Didn't like the way the front bounced around and did not jump right at all. Switched to Green losi 22T front springs and it was much better, but not what I hoped. No better than AE. Put Losi yellow rears on the rear and tweeked my setup, and it was decent, but still not right. Then came the Avids. Put the yellow fronts on and white rears to get close to AE Blue/Green, and that was light years ahead of any Losi combo and a little better than my SC ever handled. Little soft out back though so I put the Yellows on the rear, and put the Whites up front on a tip from my buddy, WOW! Now I just need to learn to pull the damn trigger through the turns lol! It doesn't dive any direction and it feels stuck to the track. I am running the Maifield 2011 nats setup but with .05 rear hubs, 35/30wt, 0 front camber and 0 toe, Avid Yellow 1.99 white 3.16 and Ghea pistons. I will be running this setup for a while for sure. Med/large outdoor track, clay/dirt mix, wet, hardpack. Anyone on the fence about getting the springs, get them. I also picked up the Avid buggy springs tonight. They are all that. And yes I have tried the Kyosho springs.
Great info to know . Thanks a lot for writing that Mike. Glad to hear that the Avid's are an option that will actually perform similar to the AE stock springs. You say your running .05 rear hubs... are they plastic AE ones, or are they aluminum? I am currently running AE plastic B44 0deg. hubs in the rear, but have considered switching to aluminum ones in possibly a different degree. Thanks
