I put in a friends novak 8.5ss geared 18/84 (the recomended starting point for 8.5) and it will shit all over my viper 8.5 with the 21 gear. I started at 18 and it wouldnt out run a 17.5 great temp though it was only about 90 deg after like 15 min. So my 1st question is do I keep gearing with stock timing till I get to like 150 deg? or can I leave tinming where it is add another gear or 2? which is better?
How large and/or open is your track? 18/84 or 18/87 is where I'd recommend starting the VST 8.5/VTX10 setup on a ~45x80ft tight track. As you increase motor timing you'll lose a lot of torque, so gearing up and increasing motor timing simultaneously isn't usually the best combination. Perhaps try timing back to default 30* and gearing up farther, it should only take a couple more teeth before you see the proper temps and performance. Obviously if the motor comes off at 90* in 15min it is not being pushed to its potential. And I'm thinking when it was running 130* it may have been over-timed for that gearing and running inefficiently so it was getting up to temp but not setup properly. We almost never adjust motor timing in the positive direction, if I ever touch it it's usually retarding it to get a little more torque.
