Essentially you are narrowing the foam. Some actually use a 4wd front foam or narrow the rear foam to 4wd width. I typically narrow them by 5-10mm.
This gives more overall grip and can reduce traction rolling slightly. This is predominantly done on tracks that do not allow sauce.
If you are using sauce, that will generate more grip and the foam width isnt as critical but can still help slightly with traction rolling.
