Default Motor/ESC

I need some help.

I have recently joined a robotics research group and we are using off-the-shelf RC frames for our rovers.

The issue I am having is that when I joined the group said "here are some of our old bots, the ESCs have all burnt out and we need you to fix them"

I dont know much about the RC hobby, and I even had to look up what an ESC was. Can someone point me in the right direction of where to learn about sizing ESC's for my motors?

Specifically, we have a crawler that has dual 540 motors, and I have had a tough time finding out how much power draw the motors will have and finding ESC's that are protected to a sufficient level.

Some questions to start with. First, are the motors brushed/brushless and if brushless, sensored or not? Second, what is the spec of the battery powering them? You'll need to know that info to get more specific as it relates to what you'll need for an ESC.

Motors have 2 wires = brushed. 3 wires + sensor cable = brushless.
