It's all good. I know you were trying to help. Just was trying to point out certain facts wasn't trying to be an ass.

bmhicks78, what did you end up buying? Do you need more advice or you are set on what to purchase?

Again, thanks for all of the information! Even if it isn't on something I think I want to do now, I fully admit to being a noob and my preferences could change fairly quickly.
I am actually not buying right away. I get a nice bonus check from work in mid-March, and wanted to spend a good amount of time researching what I want to spend. $1k is a fair amount of money, didn't want to piss it away and miss the boat on better options.
At this point, I think I've pretty much locked in the Traxxas Stampede 4x4 VXL. I'm told it comes with a lipo battery, so I need to pick up an extra and a better charger. Seems like a good enough truck for me bouncing around and playing. Not really a racer from what I see, but I can always dedicate more money to something that races down the road if I get into it.
For my son, I'm down to either the 2WD Stampede, the Losi XXX-SCT or a Kyosho UltimaSC, though I'm just now starting to do the research on the last.
From what I've heard locally there is a indoor carpet track not too far from my house that holds "training" nights during the week. I'm probably going to go spend a night or two there before purchase and watch and ask questions.
Talked with the LHS a bit today, when I go to buy I'm going to spend an hour or so with them picking out the right battery, chargers, good quality tools and anything aftermarket I will need.
The hard part is going to be waiting for patience after I get it home and can't run it right away.
Thanks for the feedback so far!

Actually, one beef I do have with the Stampede 4x4...the body rides awfully high. Makes it look pretty clunky imho. Has anyone done anything to lower the body and the cover (incorrect term I'm sure). If so, does this degrade performance?
If I can't fix the look and keep performance, I'm thinking of switching my car to a Slash 4x4 Ultimate...anyone have any input on that one?

Anyone have any opinions on the Slash vs the Stampede? I really like the looks of the Slash more, however I'm not sure if it's good for just bashing around like the Stampede would be.
Anyone have any wheel time with both?
