Default New guy!

Howdy everyone. I'm new to the hobby and got started with a pair of latrax tetons for my son and I to bash in the parking lot. Of course my daughter wants to play now so I went ahead and bought an "Adult size" truck in an e-revo 2.... I made the "Mistake" of going with 6s batteries right off the bat. Wow, I'm in over my head, this thing is WILD, I destroyed my steering servos on my second run, ordered some with metal gears, just waiting for them to come in so I can install them. Any advice to a new guy who feels like he jumped in the deep end before really learning to swim?

Bash, break, fix, repeat. That's the rc game.
6S can actually be a good way to learn throttle control. Squeezing the trigger all the way is too much so you need to back it off until you can control the vehicle. Throttle control is huge and with a smaller cell battery you'd be able to peg the throttle and drive around ok but you wouldn't learn the important skill of throttle control.

Id never recommend a New rcer to go with a 6cell to learn THrottle control.. go with less cell learn how the rc handles then go up in cells..even 4 cells on a Erevo 2 will be a Big eye opener..its a learning curve..the more cells you run the faster the rc will be along with your learning curve..or use the traxxas radios training mode switch..

So, I got my ERevo running again, put metal gears in the stock servos since they had some an hour away, got 2 runs in before it broke again, sent all the electronics in to traxxas and they're replacing them. Let's hope I have better luck going forward. This thing still blows my mind!

I'm dreaming of modding my son's teton to take a single 3s battery, I could make it work if I move the electronics to the battery tray and put the battery on the top, that way we could all use the same batteries, I'd have to replace the motor and ESC first, Which is going to cost more than the car did in the first place. Then, of course, I'm going to have to replace almost everything in the drive line to handle that power, is there a quick and dirty list of straight plastic to steel upgrade parts for something like the teton? Or is it too low a level of car for parts like that to be easily available? Is there a 1/16 th 3s car that will take these giant batteries (5000 mah traxxas 3s) I see there is an ERevo 1/16 that will take 3s, but it takes the smaller ones and mine won't fit. it sounds like madness, but maybe I'm better off just getting a second full size ERevo swapping in the metal gears and running his in "Training mode"

Any ideas?

It seems silly to sink money into the tetons when all their parts feel like they're made of milk bottle plastic.

I’ve seen a few LaTrax with full sized battery strapped in. All suffered from weight balance.

Even most 1/14 will use the small batteries.

3s on the 1/16 tends to be hard on parts. I had 2 mini revos, at one point 5 of the Traxxas 1/16 vehicles. 2s worked good. I just always had multiple batteries.

If 3s is the goal. I’d suggest looking into a standard sized 1/10 truck.

With the state of Hpi I don’t know if it’s still available. But the 1/12 SavageXS used standard sized batteries. Great little truck. The originals had issues when running 3s. But 2s was plenty. I believe Hpi did upgrade the esc to better handle 3s. In later versions.

There looks to be a couple brand new ones, and a few used ones on eBay

I ran down the parts I'd need and I'm better off buying another full sized E-revo and just running it in training mode for the boy. I'll probably do the same for mine, put the high speed gear in it and run it in training mode for a theoretical 35 mph top speed. Think this will do any harm to my ESC and motor?
