Default Brush questions

Hey guys, this is a simple one I'm sure has been debated many times here. But I can't find much information on it anymore due to brushed motors not being used that often. I have forgotten pretty much everything I used to know involving them as well, which doesn't help

Anyways, I have 2 rebuildable brushed motors for my Revo and for my Lunchbox. One is an Orion Method Pro 15x2, and the other is a relic of the past, an Integy Matrix V10 Twin Turbo 27T. I have not used the Integy yet (Still NIB), but have ran the Orion a few times after break in. I'm now looking into getting some brushes for these motors soon. The Orion brushes look good yet, but I'm sure they won't last long. I want brushes that are easy on the comms, especially for the Integy as I'd like to keep it in good shape. What compound and brand would be good for these? Iirc, pure copper soft brushes were what I used to run in mod motors to keep the comm in good shape, but it's been so long I'm just not sure.

IIRC, the softer the brushes were, the more often you had to true the comm.

Hmmm, if that's the case then I definitely didn't run soft brushes. So I should look for med to hard pure copper brushes for comm longevity? Also, these motors are used purely for bashing so top performance isn't super important.

Look for some of the Trinity "XXX" brushes. They were designed for long brush and com life on the hottest mod motors (I used them on 8T motors). For a 15T and 27T, they will last just about forever and be easier on the com. Also, if the 27T motor has "laydown" brushes (wider than the are tall) converting to stand-up brushes will improve com and brush life.

Try posting a WTB here for the XXX brushes. Also there are some XXX standup brushes on eBay right now (not mine!). You do not want the ellipse or octagon.

The ones on Ebay are all eclipse and octagon, that sucks! What about the XXX P94 ones? I'll look around some more and see what I can find. All I can find new are Integy, Holmes, Team Brood, and Muchmore Racing which I've never heard of. Holmes is more about crawling though I think so not sure about high RPM stock and mod motors. I think I saw that the XXX brushes are pure silver, so if I bought some silver brushes from Holmes or Team Brood, would that be similar?

Yes the 27T is a lay down brush, and it is an Atlas motor. I also have some Chameleon 2 19T motors that I believe are lay down. I found these http://www.integy.com/st_prod.html?p...w#.VzggDuSvi1s, should hopefully work for both the 19T Epic and 27T Atlas motors? For that price I may just order them and find out. P94's from memory are a different profile (shape) to standard brushes so will require different brush hoods (correct me if i'm wrong). If you want long life, stay right away from anything 'silver'. Look for a 'hard' brush, you should be OK with that.

Yes I ran across a few forums mentioning a P94 conversion kit, so I think you're spot on there. I searched around some more and found some XXX type brushes made by Team Brood. Here's a link to them here. They also sell the F brushes and 729 on there, as well as various others. I remember guys running the F and 729's quite often back in the day, but can't remember their properties. I found some Trinity 4380 as well, which are listed as hard copper. Anyways, thanks for the help so far! I'll keep looking around for more info, I think Integy has some hard copper ones on their site, too. If anything I can experiment with the Orion motor, since I can buy more of those brand new and don't care as much about ruining it, also I believe it draws the most amps and is less efficient so it would be a good gauge regarding wear.

Alrighty got it. Thanks for the help man! I'm gonna go ahead and order those hoods from Integy. May as well get some pinions and such from them as well so I can adapt my Revo to different motors. That 27T is slated for my Lunchie only for now, but the Chameleon 2 would go nicely in my Revo I think. It will be interesting to compare that to the Orion 15T China made motor indeed! One of the Chameleons seems a bit sloppy so now I gotta look for some shims.

One more question, I noticed my Trinity motors have polarized brush springs, what is the purpose for those? They are different colors, so I assume they are different tensions. My Integy V10 uses 2 identical springs as does the Orion. Back in the day I just ran whatever came stock in the motor, but now I'm wondering if I should play with springs, too.

If using the same springs and brushes on both sides, there is generally more arcing on the positive brush than the negative one. So it was typical to use a heavier spring on the positive side to reduce the arcing. Trinity even offered polarized brush sets with a different brush for positive and negative. Putnam also offered a brush set with a higher silver brush for the positive than negative.

Ah OK that makes sense. I'll just leave the springs alone on the Trinity motors and maybe try some higher tension ones on the positive of the other 2 motors.

Awesome! I'm looking forward to using my Chameleon in the Revo. Good timing too as the brushes in my Method are getting a little low.
