Rescue of a glued switch...
#1
Hey hey, here's what I've done to rescue an esc switch so that the set button would be consistent - got the chassis used and am dressing it up.
The case had been CA'd to the side of the speedo and got some inside. The symptoms were absence of click during the switching action and spotty entrance into the setup mode.
First, I hooked up to the leads through the insulation with super fine probes to make sure it all would operate before going to the trouble. Normally, I'd just solder on another full switch or add on a Radio Shack push button in parallel with the white setup signal wire and the black "ground" wire.
I had some pins lying around my work area and noticed that some straight pins out of a really very nice silk dress shirt looked exactly like the tips - go figure. So you can fasten a couple of those into alligator clips and shrink them to accomplish the same thing.
Next, I carefully sliced & pried it off the speedo.
Bought some CA nitro debonder and filled the switch cavity with it, waited 2 minutes and exercised the switches for about 15 seconds. Rinsed it with alcohol and repeated. During some of the rinsing, and while wearing protective glasses, I flicked it good with one of my fingers to aid the dislodging action of blowing through a straw.
I'm not sure the alky rinse was needed, but I tested some added to debonder on a paper towel and at least it didn't blow up
Look what came out! Some of it was sticky and probably would've rebonded. Did a final rinse wearing goggles and blowing the straw and let it sit for about 20 minutes. I wouldn't leave the debonder on for a long time, but for this, it didn't appear to attack the wiring or the casing.
Tip for the debonder: DON'T cut off a piece of the tip like they say, prick it from the top with a small/medium safety pin - it comes out plenty fast!
Note both that some drought had bonded with the red button and shows up as pink on the tip of my awl. Also, that there's a piece that didn't come all the way out on the upper left of the last pic, but it's benign.
Voila! Works great and is all ready to glue back onto the speedo......hmmmm......

ps. Can someone tell me how to place the pics near each paragraph? I read a couple blurbs here on RCT, but didn't catch that part.

If the speedo was bad, I'd be returning it and I didn't want to chance disturbing any of the other plastics or insulation.
Some time when I'm doing foams, I'll get out and old speedo or similar and see what it does.
Have you soaked any of the more brittle casings? Did they craze or melt any?

If Acetone starts eating plastic/rubber you can also use Naphta.
