2wd SCT mod Motor

2wd SCT mod Motor
I know there are multiple threads on this but all of them seem to be from 2013 or earlier and technology has changed since then so I thought I'd ask now. What motor do yall run for 2wd SCT in the mod class? What brand and turn motor would you recommend? My club will be changing at the next race so I need a new motor. I am currently running a hobbywing v3.1 esc(120a) and a trinity d4 toronado from express motorsports.(17.5)
Thanks!
Thanks!

Most of the pro guys run an 8.5 motor. I have run almost everything from a 17.5 to a 6.5 ( just to try it) and I prefer a 10.5. Plenty of speed and tons of torque for the heavier short course trucks. Problem is getting the power to the ground. SC tires are pretty limited with the amount of traction they can provide but it is there. Set up has a lot to do with it. I found thru running my different motors that I was just as fast with my 13.5 as I was with my 8.5 ( I was almost out of control with my 6.5) but was not as comfortable with the 8.5. You had to be very gentle on the throttle coming out of the corners. The 13.5 was tons more forgiving but I tried to drive it harder which made me less consistant is some area. The 10.5 was the perfect mix of these 2 for me.
But I have seen a 17.5 run just as competitive against mod motors.......
Brand will be up to you. Most quality name brands will be fine.
Good luck.

Thank you that is extremely helpful!!
Ok I do have a question out of curiosity though. I was looking at the motors in Amain and noticed that motors that had a less than 9.5 rating were classified as "mod" and 10.5 up were classified as "spec" motors. Is there a difference in how these motors are made to call them a "mod" or "spec" motor or is it solely the motor turn that defines this?

But there is a difference. Lower turn motors will usually have a larger or different rotor and internals because they are considered a "MOD" motor and those above rule books allow for different specs.
Basicly, if you are worried about being illegal, go with a name brand. They made the engineers do their homework and have produced a product that is made to work within the limits of the rule book.

I as just more curious than anything else. Thanks for all your help!

I run a Reedy Mach 2 8.0T motor in my mid motor SC6. It all depends on setup for traction. I used to run a Reedy Mach 2 13.5T in the SC6 and it was great for Spec Racing. I recently went to MOD so I can race in our Pro2 class.

Another vote for a 10.5 as a good first mod motor coming from 17.5. It's a nice bump in power, generally less critical for gearing, more tolerant of developing driving skills and longish practice runs.

Ok thanks for all the input guys! Now what brand would yall recommend?

I run a Vampire SR1+ and V2 6.5T in my Durango DESC210. Wicked fast and great fun to drive, can pull a wheelie half way down the straight. It has a softer bottom end so does not overpower grip but the top end is fantastic.

Now we get into sensored and unsensored motor. For racing, sensored is really the way to go. It provides smooth throttle input during the lower parts of the RPM's. That will be dependant of the ESC you use. If your ESC does not have a sensor input, I would suggest getting one. You can use a sensored motor with a sensorless ESC. You just don't run the sensor wire...

I do have a sensored esc and definately want a sensored motor...

Oh and I have a hobbywing v3.1 120a esc

I would be looking at the Hobbywing 10.5 bandit to pair with that ESC for mod 2wd, Fast and smooth!
