Soldering irons

Back in the day the soldering iron to get was the Ungar iron. It appears that they are nolonger. What are some recommendations for an iron?

+1 on TK-950... I struggled until I got my TK-950. They are on sale on Amazon right now for $69.99. I bought mine off Amazon for $85-$90 I think. I think the TK-950 is just a repackaged Hakko.

it is, and the digital hakko is pretty close to that price range. Trakpower has a new digital station that looks pretty good also

I love my hakko fx88. it's always the days it gets left home that I need it at the track and then have to end up borrowing someone elses burned up 40watt pencil. lol

I don't like the hakko digital, and wish I had gotten one with a dial, as the digital is too complicated for changing temps.

I actually still have an Ungar heater from when I was racing slot cars in the 1960s but the ceramic insulator is flaking off.

When I got into RC 14 years ago and started looking for a replacement, I found out that Ungar was bought out by Weller. So I started looking for something equivalent in the Weller line. I now use a Weller 4033S heater in my old Ungar handle. It is 45 watts and has a 1000 F rated tip temperature. Yes One Thousand degrees F.

I used all that heat back in the day soldering battery bars to build NiCD and NiMH packs. When I don't feel the need for quite that much power, I run it through the base that comes with the WLC-40 kit. It has a knob to turn the heat down. It is not a fancy electronic temperature control, but it does the job.

I have seen people using Hakkos and the like and none of the results I've seen compare to what I can do with the 4033S. It has a much bigger chisel tip than can be accommodated on a Hakko. There is plenty of heat capacity on that tip for 10 gauge and even 8 gauge wire.

+1 on the Track Power it is used almost everyday if not multiple times everyday at my local hobby shop.

I like my Goot PX201. Awesome soldering iron. It's like soldering station, but compact and light. Thermal control, replacement tips, 75W (i'm soldering 8-9mm connector, T-dins, 1/8 motor and other), heat cup, lead-free compatible. All-time in my pitbag :)
