can I use a futaba 4pls with an avc receiver?

Are you talking about using a Futaba Tx with a Spektrum receiver?

You should know the answer to that question already.....

I read somewhere that it could be done but I didn't believe it, so I thought I would ask as I am frequently wrong

Absolutely no. AVS is completely proprietary to Spektrum.
