Default Motor Turns on Temperature

So I just recently blew up a Reedy 7.5 and Speed control in my 4wd buggy, and I am in the market for some new electronics (there was a short circuit). I run on a variety of surfaces, so I want to find the best motor for all. I run on a very small, tight indoor carpet track, to a very large indoor clay track, and even larger outdoor dirt track with it. For the outdoor track I need more of a 6.5 for power and speed, but on the carpet track an 8.5 is overkill, not getting up to half throttle down the straight. I don't want to have to change motors or gearing that often (nor can I afford multiple motors ) to suit the tracks and electronic temperatures. Plus I go from one to the other on a weekly basis.

So my question is: Would it be better to run a 6.5, that when on the tight carpet would be run mostly half throttle, and boosted outdoors? Or to stick with a higher turn motor, like a 7.5 or 8.5? Like would the 6.5 at half throttle run cooler than an 8.5 all out? Or would there be more resistance in the 6.5 that causes it to run hotter?

Thanks!

Not sure what turn motor you should get, but if you're going to run on a clay surface, have a look at some of the Speed Passion motors. They don't have cooling vent holes in the can, so you're less likely to get dirt into the motor.

Viper also make a 6.5 turn combo, but all the Orion, Tekin, LRP, Novak, Speed Passion electronics are all good.

I had a 5.5 in my 4wd on the MARCCA carpet, it would get turned down to about 85% & was very drive-able.

I have ran a plain old 6.5 in my 4x4 SCT & under geared it & boosted it to the hilt. I wouldn't recommend it...

All & all I'll take a touch too much & turn it down then melt out the motor from wanting more & asking too much.

Bang for the buck I'd try a Speed Passion 6.5 V3 (new $40) & dial accordingly.
If you have a boost-able ESC & are comfortable with setup, a boosted undergeared 8.5 would likely be more than enough.

As far as temperature, you can get either hot... it is a factor of duty cycle & load.
In general the 6.5 will run "hotter" than the 8.5, but if you gear &/or boost either improperly you can heat them up fast.
I have 6.5's that are 5+ years old that have been ran in Slashes outdoors & they would do 130-150 all day long & have no issue.
Burning the tires off & not having any finger control will heat up things a lot too.

If you are running two radically different places that need very different setups you may not have an easy fix.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will end up going with a 6.5 I can turn down for indoors. Surprisingly my cars set up for both tracks hardly varies. I just put on short spring cups which lower the ride height for carpet. Otherwise it's the same setup. Plus it isn't economical to have 2 cars or motors. Thanks

This hobby has very little to do with economics... sooner or later you will end up with that second car
