Tekin Hotwire App!!

as far as im aware most smart phones don't work that way.
you cant even hook one up to a stereo's usb input to play music.
who's going to run out and buy a new phone to use a app to change a throttle setting? i sure the heck aint
would i buy a $30 adapter for bluetooth. sure. or how about a controller?
not sure why so many guys are hung up on doing everything the hard way. a simple controller with a menu is easier, faster and 100% fool proof.
that phone app will be a uber nightmare of tech support.

Its not just having a smart phone, it's having a smart phone that actually has the correct android version and has OTG. Use apple? Your out. Use a windows phone? your out. Don't have the correct version of android? Your out. Your phone doesn't support OTG? Your out.
I myself have 3 smart phones all on Android 4.0 ICS and none of them have OTG. 3 strikes and I'm out. I am sure I am not the only one with this problem.
I understand Tekin is trying to be different, but in this case I think it was a bad call.

+1 They released it because it works on some devices, it also helps them test it out and get constructive feed back from actual users. They are aware of the problem and are actively trying to work it out. I'm not going to worry till its full release and it still doesn't work. Constructive criticism, I'd like to have setting descriptions incorporated in some way. Helps new guys like me be sure about what we are changing.

Tekin has a lot of nerve selling this junk.....oh wait, it's free, oh wait, it works fine on my tablet and the cable was delivered for under $7.00. I think your signature displays your negative attitude.
"Clay sucks.
It's not off-road if your not throwing dirt"
Thank you Tekin, not all of us dislike your efforts

And for the Apple comment, that has been covered many times previously, not a problem on Tekin's end. Remember, these guys make great ESC's and motor's first. They don't make the phones and they don't write the various OS.

Guys we're open to all constructive criticism, at all times. He's entitled to his opinion, same as us.
The app is "Beta" and yes it's free. There are many inexpensive android devices most of which are listed on our support forum in case there are people who run Mac/Apple or for those that don't have a compatible android device. You can check out the info here: http://www.teamtekin.com/forum/viewf...a36c2c892b1d02
I have quite a few android devices. I had to roll back my "Track" tablet so I can run the app. My S2 US variant doesn't have OTG but if I had the "rest of the world" variant it would? Go figure right! lol My S4 supports OTG but is running 4.2 or higher, so a few AOS issues there preven the app from working. For around $50 you can get a small tablet to use with the app, just about the cost of most hand held programmers that provide the same functionality except now you have a tablet that you can check email, surf the web, watch movies, listen to music, etc etc for the price of that "other guys" programmer box.
The app works, and works well on compatible devices. Because of this we chose to launch the app, in Beta form to allow our consumers to use it, help test it on their devices to build up the knowledge base of know working devices, and benefit from the new technology.
Please continue the "constructive" conversation, we appreciate it.

Anytime you open up yourself or your products for a "speculative" possibility of "foul play" via wi-fi or bluetooth the sanctioning bodies will shut it down. I'd wager that the more wireless connectivity we see via these new technologies the more rules will follow. Adjusting the esc on the "fly" sounds great to the consumer, and may happen in the future. But during a live racing event? Not likely legal...
It's not like some of the top guys aren't using "special" equipment anyways right? Any most, if not everyone knows it yet they do nothing about it. As long as it keeps people intrigued enough to buy product it all slides under the rug.
As for Bluetooth programming of ESC's and the legality as per ROAR, there are already a few brands out there already with this system and thus far I haven't read anywhere about anyone cheating with it so I don't see a problem with it. This is logically the simplest way around all the issues because all smart phones have Bluetooth already as well as most tablets and laptops. This would circumvent all the host control issues with Apple devices and the compatibility issues of different systems on phones and tablets.
In regards to preventing on the fly changes, that again is simple. All you'd have to do is implement a master rule whereby one can only program the ESC while it is completely idle, then remove the sensor wire from your ESC to connect the BT module, AND you'd have to physically depress the program button(s) to set the ESC to Bluetooth programming mode.
Problem solved.

Racing rules aren't always made out of "logic." Often they're made to prevent the "potential" of an issue or falsehood.... Hence not always that simple.
Trust me, at a large sanctioned event many of these "ideas" will be shot down and made illegal. I too hope I'm wrong, but I've been doing this for awhile and I've yet to see an open armed embrace to the "new" tech being offered at times.

If I have to manually depress a button to initiate using the bluetooth feature, what's the point? If I have touch the buttons on my Tekin I can make the change without the module or external device....

There are only two real classes that this could be an issue right?
Stock and Super Stock? Off road and on road
and lets be honest, we all know when someone isn't on the up and up.
If someone is pulling away on a straight or pulling you down a straight it becomes obvious. There usually multiple manufacturers cars in a race and if one is really putting the power down above everyone else people are going to take notice. (major races is what I am referring to)
If a guy is able to use throttle control on the straight to hide the cheating it will have to show on the infield where he/she would just be so much faster than everyone else.
Point is I get what you are saying and agree but for someone to try to pull this off at a major event would be suicide because there are to many experts there and they will notice.
If a club racer is doing this to get noticed what is he going to gain when he attends a major race and gets noticed as being faster than everyone else. He will be caught.
changing rotor's and stuff like that is a whole other topic...

"IF" you allow for on the fly adjustment of settings without physically depressing a button, then you're asking for trouble and then the cheating will commence. I played paintball for almost 25 years and the technology of controller boards and engineers' ability to allow the players to change settings that were illegal was so wide spread, the sanctioning bodies had to intervene and special robots were designed and manufactured to try and catch the cheaters by checking the Markers. And even still, some cheating was going on. The reason that type of cheating was so easy to do was because the players had the Markers in hand and could, by a series of specific trigger presses, set the modes to cheat and just as easily set it back if a ref thought they were cheating.
With an RC car you'd first have to connect the BT module to then change STATIC settings and save before exiting. If I'm not mistaken, the issue the majority of your customers are complaining about is not about having a "wireless" method of connecting and making on the fly changes to ESC settings, but rather, simply having the ability to make changes to the ESC in general. Not all of us like or have a desire to buy/own a Windoze PC/Laptop or Android devices.
By putting out a Bluetooth module your costumers then have a choice of buying either the current plug in hotwire OR a wireless module that plays nice with SmartPhones and iDevices without issue.
Seems to me you guys aren't yet seeing why many of us cannot comprehend why a BT Module can't be made to make this whole issue a non-issue. Simply telling people to go out and buy a crappy tablet for $50 is not the answer either. I'd rather spend that on a Bluetooth Module so I can make changes via my iPhone which I carry in my pocket 100% of the time being as I have to be in communication with customers and vendors at all times.

You guys are making some of my points for me here...
If the sanctioning bodies "think" there's a chance to cheat, they're hesitant at best.
I'm hearing your cry for wireless connectivity. We're not saying "no" at this point. The app is an answer for most, not all. Many people have a compatible device already in their regular day to day life.
I'd be $1(gentlemen's bet) that the rule makers will NOT allow any wireless connectivity to be used on the track, while on the clock at any major race. If anything is allowed, it'd be data logging and even that I'd wager will get an eye browse raise.
Tekin is in the business of innovation. You talk, we listen. You're talking, and we're listening....
