Is this a good combo?

Hey guys. In the spring and summer time, I plan on racing 1/8 electric buggy. Now the power systems are quite expensive, but right now towerhobbies has a sale on the Duratrax 1/8 Onyx 2650kV Brushless System. Is this system any good for racing 1/8?

I would recommend a Hobbywing combo

Same price, better quality, and you can get a sensored motor then (preferable imho)

HW Xerun ESC'sare very good. Not a big fan of their 1/8th scale hard wired motors. Below is a list of the best 1/8th buggy combo going, including approximate shipped prices:
ESC ($100): http://www.falconsekido.com/products...t-pro-esc-blue
Motor (~$70): http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...or_1900KV.html
Castle BEC ($25): http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...Adjustable-BEC

I want to jump in and make a comment and observation. OP started out loking at a 2650kv sensorless motor, and a 1900kv sensored motor was suggested. There's a pretty big difference in RPM between the two on both 3S and 4S. I would use a larger pinion with the 1900kv, or a smaller pinion with a 2650kv. This Onyx esc and Hobbywing SCT Pro esc are very similar, except HW can run sensored motors. So keep in mind that the Trackstar motor and HW combo suggested is sensored, but the Onyx combo you started looking at is not.
I have that same exact Onyx 2650kv sensorless combo in a 1/8 buggy - it's durable and very fun. But I don't race, so you might prefer sensored. WHATEVER YOU DECIDE TO PURCHASE, GET A PROGRAMMING CARD!!
If you're going for 4S max and on a tight budget, I recommend this for about a hundred bucks total (prices without shipping, all from China so maybe $15 or so shipping):
$50 Turnigy SC120 esc http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Truck_ESC.html (This esc is surprisingly similar to the Onyx one you asked about. Have several, love 'em)
$8 program card http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ming_Card.html
$29 motor http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...nner_19T_.html (This motor is very similar to the Castle 1415 2400KV 3674 can size motor that many people know and love)
or this $50 larger can size motor would be a sweet fit but it's out of stock at the moment http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ess_Motor.html
The other guy's suggestion is also perfectly fine

Just pick up one of these, you get the program card, which is a major major plus.

This thread may be on interest, one of many. 1700 to 1900kv motors on 4S are preferred by the majority of 1/8 electric racers.

/\ You do realize that the hobbywing combo we both linked to was $199 and included the programming card (same price as the onyx you mentioned in your first post).
Pick a motor based on what you are going to do. Racing, bashing, and speed runs are all different. A lower kv motor will give you longer run times but you will give up some top end for lower end torque. For racing a lower kv motor is preferable (1900-2200 is the sweet spot on 4s). If you are bashing or going for speed then get the higher kv motor at the expense of run time.

I run the HW SCT Pro in my 1/8 buggy. Tons of power and smooth. You would like it.

Cool thanks! Sounds like a good system.
