Default tech/cost question- malfunctioning receiver

Ruined my Nikko basher's receiver by running it in damp lots. I'm entertaining the notion of reviving it with a water resistant, 2.4ghz receiver and 2.4ghz transmitter.

Is this a really feasible idea? Alternative ideas?

I see rx/tx combos used on eBay for as little as $20 and ESCs for little as $12. I am not sure whether I would have to replace the steering too (see below).

more about the car:
From what I can tell this car sold at RadioShack for the 2006 holiday season is part of Nikko's Evolution series. It uses a plastic chassis with a lexan shell. The power is delivered via rwd sealed unit with a brushed (540?) motor.

The car has an on-board speed control/receiver unit with the motor leads soldiered on to the aforementioned unit. The servo (which may be a motor given it has about six wires), plugs into the receiver/esc board. It would appear the SC works fine as it will vary speed as is the steering as both work perfectly at approx 1m away (no further or closer).

The tx/rx uses 26.xxx mhz, I have tried a crystal&tx swap from a lesser Nikko which produced identical behavior. I have already put all of the cars on-board electronics through various drying techniques (heater, sealed rice container), soldiered any weak points, etc.

You will need to remove ALL the electrics except for the motor from the nikko. So you need a swervo as well. At that point you will have $50 wrapped up in a $10 car. You can of course use the radio later when you upgrade the car to a hobby level one. The problem with those toy level cars is you can't get parts. Consider putting that $50 toward a hobby level ReadyToRun vehicle that you can service and upgrade.

Good point, the chassis is cheap as is the motor and the electronics are garbage but worst of all- it does not have parts available. Perhaps I will steal its motor for another chassis or something.

Also after driving my HPI Sprint 2 for only a few 20 min runs (and some drifiting whilst still misaligned)... the night and day difference between the HPI and the Nikko regarding performance is too much to ignore.

Thanks for the advice

I'm considering my next car to be a M-chassis Tamiya or the like, but needs to be RWD. I want to build a car for the HPI Lancia Stratos 210mm body. Any recommendations?
