Hi all, I have spent a good few days browsing various forums catching up old topics about Savox servos, sadly there still isn't that much concrete info readily available. I have been away from big scale RC for quite a few years and now that I am returning I would like to change out my Futaba S9451/S9351 sets for some new stuff.
Savox seems to have a good rep for mechanical reliability and their on paper performance cannot be beaten for the $$. The major question however is the obvious one when talking Savox...brownout and glitching and whats up with it? The consensus seems to be the Amp draw from these things causing trouble with particular ESC or Rx. My prob is that I just picked up a DX3R Pro which falls square in that category and my older remote is a Spektrum'd Futaba as well. Here are my thoughts...hopefully the Savox users can step up and help me out.
1. The issues all seem to be related to the electric powered guys, any nitro have the same experiences?
2. If it is voltage related and I keep it on 6v, shouldnt that solve the prob? (all-be-it reduced performance)
Now, not related to the above...but my first new build to try these servos out on will be a basher Savage. I want to try and go with the Extra tall line of servos as they have some massive figures perfect for my needs, referring to the 123x line. I have read people with SC trucks and crawlers have hell fitting these, is it really that bad? I though it would be easy in those trucks with some shimming or shaving. Any persons out there with experience out there on them? Especially in a Savage. Those extra 7mm of height seems to be a tricky deal for the forum topics I found.
Thanks in advance for any help! I am in a new round of RC addiction so any help appreciated before I waste money on what I can't work with.

you wouldn't have a problem with nitro as you use a rx pack to directly power the servos.
in electric you can have a brownout if the power supply from the esc to the rx is less than perfect.
this is a simple fix though. just install a 4800UF cap onto one of the rx channel leads to keep the rx fed with stable power.
otherwise, savox servos are excellent for the money spent on them. cant compare them to higher end units as they are all i have, though i might pick up some airtronics units for the new radio to compare.
no complaints though. 12th scale, 10th scale nitro and 10th electric tc all on savox servos and running VERY strong.

I've owned a few 1258's in 1/10 electrics and they all performed well. Can't run them without a external BEC which turns me off a bit. To me that means I gotta drop another $20 to run it. Don't have to do that with my Hitec, Futaba or airtronics servos. But other than that they've performed flawlessly. And you mentioned "On paper" ..... Big Squid tested and reviewed Savox 750TG ahwile back. Interesting reading.

I run a 1256TG in my E-Maxx and E-Muggy, as well as a 1258TG in my Ofna Buggy. No BEC's needed (HW 150A's in the MT's, HW SC-8 in the Buggy). Great servos, no fitting issues either.
I do however run a Flysky radio setup, which doesn't have the brownout issues the Spek stuff does.

Thanks guys, this is exactly the type of first hand info and advice I was looking for! RCTech looks like it will be a great help in getting back into the Hobby
Much appreciated.
@Valk/Azeroth Thats comforting to know in nitro it will be a simple deal. My older batteries probably aren't 1600mah (atleast not anymore anyway lol!) but I will see how it goes. Wouldn't mind upgrading all packs to LiPo or LiFe or whatever is the most readily available and reliable these days.
Addict those are good pros and cons. That squid review prob was the first thing I saw about the brand, I find it wierd with Savox featuring ads on so many websites I go to that they haven't sent more servos out for reviews.
Drake, it just goes to show that in this day and age of RC that companies can make proper stuff that works like your Flysky. They don't cost a fortune but people are happy with them, I can never get it how other companies with more $ and clout continuously put out products that "also need xx". Quite annoying in this hobby.
Now this still leave me desperate for info on the 1231 and other of the "Extra Tall" 45mm servo. Really need to find fitment on those, please if anybody uses them speak up.
I have that "itch" again so I think I may end up with a few new servos in the next 24hours if I find and answer lol!!!
Thanks so much so far and keep the experience coming!

with a 1257 and 58 tg in my nt1, no problem with a full days racing on one rx pack. 1300mah reedy life. dont have to charge it for an hours running.
you dont need a bec, just a cap. its very simple and doesnt cost $20.. the spectrum one is $6, or if you have an electronic supplier in your won, less for raw caps, just solder on tails.

all there is to it.

Man I stopped buying savox servos.
Brown outs with no Cap
Noisey as Hell.
I blew the BEC on 3 different mamba monster ESC's in 3 months and the only thing I can point finger too is the servo.
Ever since going to Hitec I've had no problems. Don't need a Cap, much more Quiet and no blown BeCs
Some people love savox servos but I just always had problems when using them.
If you do end up running savox forget the cap and get a external BEC like the 10amp castle and you'll be good
Otherwise IMO Hitec or Ko Propo RSX series. Went with Hitec because people speak very well of their customer service. There's a few other brands that people swear by like Radio post Futaba JR

Thanks for the feedback Voltron....always important to have a balance of good and bad when its clear and honest.
I am starting to think I may just pick up one Extra tall servo just to test fitment, but at this point would be very risky to jump in on it. Especially since I would like to have the same servos is several applications.
So...still looking for Savox 1233sg and 1231sg users!!!
On another discussion as I am clearly bitten again, when I eventually swap up my NimH Rx batteries for my nitros to whatever the current standard of Lithium battery is......whats a good average Joe charger to look for?
I been looking at the Hitec X1, Duratrax 235, Thunder AC6 and Venom <insert name here> for about the last hour. Not in a rush to buy but can't hurt to look.

Well guys thanks for all the advice and help so far, I just took a small plunge and grabbed a couple servos off of KCHOBBIES12 on EBAY on a pretty nice sale and I gotta say, not only where their prices the lowest I have seen but they were VERY quick to respond to any questions I had! .....And as you all see....I have alot of questions!!! lol
Still need to know about the extra tall servos for the next project...
On to the Rx battery pack info. Any info provided is greatly appreciated, looking to take advantage of HV servos @ 7.4v!!!

Am I understanding this correctly?
* I can run a LiFe or LiPo without a regulator for the Rx pack if my servos are HV and I run 2.4ghz?
* The voltage regulator business actually refers to BEC? I thought BEC was just for EP machines.
This is a big learning experience for me with this new generation electronics. Will be back to reading after dinner.

You can run LiFe without a regulator even on regular servos.
LiPo always requires a regulator UNLESS the servos are HV and your RX is rated for HV.
Most/All ESC's contain a Regulator/BEC (Term is exchangeable) normally, but it may not always be up to the task at hand, especially with powerful/oversize servos.

if your rx supports lipos you dont need anything.
the newer airtronics fh4 systems for instance can use 7.4v native as long as your running high volt servos.
otherwise a bec is needed. unless your running a 5th scale though, probably not nessisary to run high voltage servos.
