Servo Failure

I am currently running a futaba B451 in my sc10 4x4. Twice now I have had to replace the nylon gear in it. All the other gears are metal. The problem is you can't just buy the nylon gear you have to buy the whole set. At $36 a pop. Obviously each time it broke I hit a tube or had a hard landing but that was never a problem when I ran this servo in my SCTE. I am looing to try a Savox servo can someone recomend one that will survive in this truck? How much torque do I need in a servo for it to last.

Do you use a servo saver?

roland5color 11-02-2012 01:35 PM

yes its built into the steering of the SC10

tntpoof 11-02-2012 02:21 PM

put one on your servo.. I have my SCTE setup that way..

I run a 2271SG in my 2WD ST. It's unbelievably fast, a bit pricey, and WAY overkill, but I never have to worry about damaging it.

then you should back off the servo saver a bit. Stripping the gear twice is telling you the saver might be too tight.

I always ran my SCTE servo saver tight and thought I could with this truck as well but I believe your right the servo saver needs to be looser on this truck. I had my hobby shop telling me that I needed a servo with more torque. Thanks for the replies

Well I backed the servo saver off all the way and I made it through 3 qualifiers and a main without damaging the servo. So far so good thanks for the help guys.

Thats good to hear. Just remember tightening your saver down all the way defeats the purpose of it being there at all.

SCTE servo savor =/= SC10 4x4 servo saver. All of them are different and need to be adjusted accordingly.

I love Futaba servos. But I think thats a poor choice for that truck. I think a good one for that truck would be the ace/ds1015. For 4wd SC I'd be looking for >180 tq and <.10 speed. With the higher torque servos you normally get all metal gears because if they didn't put them in they would fail for sure. I don't personally care for Savox but a lot of people use them with out any issues. I'd look at the Savox 1258TG.

So in a way I agree with your local hobby shop. And just think, if it fails again you could have bought a brand new servo that is better suited to that truck for what you have spent fixing it. ;)

If it is $36 each time you have to repair it, I would run it until it failed again and then simply take a moment to consider replacing the whole servo vs repairing it.

Just adds up too fast if it keeps breaking, worth buying your way out of that problem at some point.

As for the servo saver you are correct Sr. I have learned my leason on that one. I guess I was spoiled by my losi cars and trucks. My 22 doesn't even have one. The B451 does have metal gears. Just the one is nylon or whatever material it is. Do you know of a servo that has all metal gears? My hobby shop also told me that all servos have at least one nylon gear is this correct? Oh and if it fails again I will definately be buying a servo with more torque.

Fwiw, futaba may make a metal gear that would replace the nylon one. It would be for a different model but many times they will list the cross references somewhere. I dont remember the model numbers, but i have done this with some airtronics before. It may not be worth it to do this time but you can keep it in mind.
