Run it again then check the cells again, if it's way out of balance again talk to Danny, he'll probably want you to ship the pack to him and he'll do his voodoo on it. I had a pack where one cell doubled in resistance and did what you are described

I have also done the balance cable re-soldering repair. Instead of splitting the case alone the seams, I cut off the end of the pack. This is a lot safer than trying to split the two halves of the pack apart. There is actually a little open space on the end by the wires/bullets to make space for the solder connections, so less chance of ruining the battery. I'm throwing in an image so you can see how it turned out. I glued mine back together with "Loctite Vinyl, Fabric & Plastic" glue. It was ideal, and I think better than shoe goo for this repair. The solvent in the glue will melt/soften the plastic, essentially welding the plastic together. The repair has held up for 2 years, and the pack is still going strong! |

The other thing is that the safety time-out feature defaults to an arbitrary setting, which is on the short side. I would change it. The charger doesn't know how large your packs are, and the time limit doesn't change based on the state of charge of your battery. I had a similar charger that did the safety time-out thing (single battery hitech charger). Atleast it sounds like a similar problem. After I changed the time limit, I never had a problem with it again. |
Well I got the broken balance lead fixed. Was pretty nervous splitting the hard case but it went pretty good. I tinned the lead wire but had a heck of a time getting it to solder to the battery and I was using a 150amp gun. Took a lot of heat more than I thought. I took a couple pics I will try and upload.

here the pics i took. all that dirt on the bench came out of the battery. i wonder if i should shoe goo the wire opening to prevent dirt from getting in there.

I bought some saddle packs a number of months ago and I think they are fantastic. I also bought some shortys from another "high end" brand when I switched chassis, which are, by comparison, junk. I've got to say Iam very impressed with the SMC product. Just wish I could find somewhere in the UK that stock the shortys.

trying to find some info, i started a thread about batteries and a few people mentioned smc packs, i read through this thread and im sold on smc... sent an email through the smc webstore. is there a new 4s pack coming within a few weeks or should i just pre-order the existing 6500mah pack? and those who race ebuggy, do you prefer the single 4s or double up 2s packs?

Probably a little late here but YES, the new SMC 4S pack is listed as 6700mAh 60C extended capacity which means the mAh is around 7200mAh. $79.95. Danny has a picture on his website of this battery taking 7339 mAh! It's not huge either, the hard case is 47mm x 47mm x 139mm and weighs 629g. I don't believe there's a better 4S battery out there. |
