Same here!
I did have 2 packs puff badly on me right off the bat, I emailed Danny and he got me fixed right away! Excellent customer service!

That being said, I think most people out there don't understand, all lipos puff to some extent! They also don't understand that the lipo dimensions are set by ROAR ( I know who cares about ROAR right?) and they are packing that 7200mAh lipo into a case that was designed to hold a 5000mAh lipo....

I have to say for the money my SMC pack is the best pack I have right now!
I have been monitoring IR's and my SMC pack is the lowest! I have a protek, a venom, a gens ace, and 2 turnigy nano techs.

I am also not sponsored unless ya count my employer and bank! ;)

I do understand and what you may not is that over time the energy density has been going up. The 7200s are (as far as what I have seen available commercially) the highest currently. That said, my Gen Aces and Nano-Tech, which have been cycled many many more times, have not puffed and are not even firm. The Orca's and R1's some of the fellow racers run have not puffed as well. Pack design has nothing to do with it as they are the same dimensions as the Orcas and R1 packs and have the same power specs.

I certainly didn't mean for my post to create flames.

To be fair and honest, in my experience, the 6500 Premium Certified packs have swelled to an acceptable amount, though after a year of service, are starting to fall off a bit with respect to performance with punch and run time. They have been run hard in my SC truck, so I accept that. The 7200 "factory spec" packs have swelled excessively, and 2 are running OK with the last two out of commission, one of which I returned to SMC for evaluation - details in my last posting. My Gens Ace packs, which were my first ever (2yrs old), have not swelled at all and performance has remained consistent. Perhaps it's because of a harder case or higher internal resistance.

I'm not trying to bash SMC, but I am disappointed in the 7200 packs and the customer service when I tried to submit a very valid issue. Before ever buying an SMC pack, I called Danny and spoke with him for about an hour and half. We even spoke of EE concepts and developmental strategies. I'm most definitely particular about how I treat my gear and am willing to purchase something of quality, almost regardless of price, when warranted.

Point is - I don't abuse my gear. I don't try to make something do what was unintended. I expect proper customer service for proper use. In the 7200 factory spec packs.... I am disappointed.

Any Idea when this pack will be in?

I have 5 of the factory spec 5000 50c 2s packs and all are awsome packs for the price and are holding up well.

That may be the issue, "factory spec". Those packs are cheap and a food deal but not up to the task of 4x sct.
I don't think SMC even sell the factory spec 7200's any longer. Anyone buying that is more than likely putting it in a 4x sct and race spec is the pack to run.

ironzgti35 04-02-2014 06:09 PM

I have 4 of the 2s 6500 60c packs and have been running in 4wd sc for close to year without any puffing. 2 cases have cracked but has not been a concern of mine...

fq06 04-02-2014 06:20 PM

There is a difference in truck, power setup, racing surface, driving style, ambient temps and so on. One person without a problem does not mean all will be ok, I'm just speaking from my experience.

I don't see those on the site, is that a race spec or factory spec (used to be "factory race spec")

I don't believe there ever were any "Factory Spec" 7200s. I got 7200's from SMC as soon as them came out and they are all 70C Race spec.

And sadly, all of them (from 3 different lots) have swelled somewhat. The two newest swelled while sitting at storage charge (as received from SMC) a month before being used.

fq06 04-02-2014 08:58 PM

They also had some out of spec packs, not sure if they labeled those 7200 factory instead of 7200 race?

RC_Tactical 04-03-2014 06:13 PM

I bought into the initial release (dubbed "factory spec") of the 7200 70C packs (6500 premium certified were no longer offered) and their first run was after being cycled 4 times, then ran in 4s configuration for my 1/8 buggy. They puffed bad with this first run and that's when I contacted SMC and sent a pack in for evaluation. The others have swelled, and I accept that. I don't accept not answering my continued contact to determine what's going on with my latest order after being a repeat customer. Not even an offer to discount a replacement, or even talk to me about it, even if you felt I abused the packs. Something. Anything. Being ignored and blown off is the worst possible customer service. As I've said before, the other packs are doing fine and I'm satisfied. It's just with the latest order that I have an issue. Oh well. I do wish SMC would make it right, but I'm over it.

I orderd my 7200 was from the first batch and it was weak, not as much punch as my other packs. Ran it 4 times at the track and knew it was off so I sent it back. A month later I got the replacement and its been a great pack. Factory spec/ race formula. Maybe back then he had a factory and a race?
Don't remember but I know the first pack I got was "out of spec" so he replaced it. But I sent it back the week I got it.

Sucks but sounds like it went a year and a half at least. Mine is starting to get a little puffy but still has good punch. Its been rode hard in a Mugen & tekno sct for 1.5 years and a buddy didn't have packs so we were both on my 3 and one charge I think I didn't let it cool enough because its been fine up till that next run and it swelled a bit. Case is not separated type of a puff, but puffy.

Not getting a response is not right, I'd be over it too.

The issue occurred about a year ago, not recently, and I contacted SMC right away back then. Here is a photo of another pack from that same order that I'm still running today. They are labeled "Factory Spec" and "Race Formula". Whatever the factory rates them is what the pack is labeled as there are no more packs made by testing and matching cells.

So this comment brings an interesting thought.... I also have a C-Max pack from SMC that I use in touring car. No swelling or puffing at all. Still looks brand new and I love it. If I were to run this pack in my Short Course for a 6 minute race, I'm willing to bet it would at least swell, if not puff considerably due to the increased current demand.

Would this be considered abuse of the pack?

If anyone is willing to pay for a replacement, I'll take a video of measurements, installation, the run and the aftermath and post to YouTube. I purchased this pack just for my TC, not my SCTE, therefore I never had expectations for it to handle that kind of current load.

Please keep in mind, the other 7200 packs I purchased did and continue to do just fine. That's why I ordered more. I had an immediate issue that I addressed immediately. And now hearing there actually was a QC issue and I still wasn't taken care of....

The other packs are swollen, but I wouldn't consider them "puffed"; I feel that's more of a state when you shouldn't run the battery any more.
