mod 2wd esc temps

Hey guys, I recently switched my 17.5 stock motor to my 8.5 mod motor. With the stock motor, my Orion r10 was running temps similar to the motor. A little less. With the mod motor, the esc is getting pretty hot, but the motor barely gets warm. I was wondering if there is anything I could do. I have absolutely no timing and I'm also running a capasitor for my servo if that helps.

Thanks!

What temperature is the ESC? Motors should be around 160. Speedos can survive a little more. Remember warm to the touch and actually temeperature are different for everbody.

yes I know. My temp gun is broken so i don't know for sure. But i was gonna gear up on my motor to get more speed, would that make the temps on the esc go higher? Also, could it be a diff problem?

Temp it and get back to us but if you can touch it, it's probably ok. The top of the R10 will also be much hotter than the actual ESC because of the aluminum heatsink on top.

Okay I will. Once I buy batteries for it. Oh yeah I never thought of how the heat sinc would be hotter. Get back to you guys soon. Thanks for the advice.

FYI running undergeared and a lot of WOT will make a brushless ESC run hot.

elecRC23 08-22-2012 05:00 PM

sorry, whats WOT?

Wide Open Throttle

O ok, I'm going to the track so I will take some temps for you guys.

elecRC23 08-26-2012 09:46 AM

okay, so im running 140 on the esc after about a 15 minute run, and 120 on the motor for th same amount of time. Do you think i can gear up?

Yes

After 15 minutes? That's downright icy. Normally, temps are taken in the context of a 6-minute race run so it sounds like you could do whatever you want but the question back at you is, with an 8.5 in a buggy, do you want/need to gear up?

racer1812 08-26-2012 02:18 PM

Can't say if you should gear up without knowing what gearing you're running now.;)

81/23 in B4.1 is average, depending on track size and traction.

Eric Tomczyk 08-26-2012 08:31 PM

Sounds like you are in the ballpark. My setup normally runs 110-ish on the motor and a bit hotter on the ESC depending on how I'm driving. When it comes to modified motors, you don't gear it by temp (as opposed to stock), ideal gearing will make a mod buggy easier to drive but as long as you are not overheating either the esc or the motor it's really just personal preference.

Okay, I'd like to gear up a bit because I can clear the triple at my track with a 20t pinion and an 81t pinion. But I can't with the 23t pinion. Can I use a 19t pinion with a 72t spur? Or would that be a little weird? By the way, thanks for all the input. Didn't expect all of these responses, but keep em coming!!
